okay, i have a question about darla.

in the episode "dear boy", angel confronts the reincarnated darla (thanks to wolfram and hart) who is now human. my question deals with the effects of being turned into a vampire (besides the obvious). suppose we have a normal person. you, me, anybody. not necessarily a BAD person. would being turned into a vampire MAKE a person amoral and evil? i know angelus (liam) was already a punk before he was turned, but what about darla? would her reincarnation as a human allow her to revert back to who she was before she became a vampire? was she that mean and nasty even before she was turned? angel tries to reason with her about having a soul and how it affects a vampire, but darla does not seem to have any issues (yet, of course).
anyway, i am confused. some clarification would be greatly appreciated!

I don't want to spoil it for you so I'm not going to give you details.
If you revert back to the person you were, than Darla is still screwed. She was a not great person before her death. You'll learn more about Darla and how she died - and what she did - as this season goes on.
Liam was a total bastard before he died. Angelus allowed him to indulge that heartless side of Liam for 150 years. Perhaps Liam would have grown out of being a bastard and would have grown into a good man in 'real time' had he not been turned into a vamp.
As it is, Angel was cursed with his soul and the 'adult' Angel became that grown up that Liam never had a chance to become the first time around.

According to Giles (in early Buffy), the victim's personality "informs" the vampire (Angel started to say something to [possibly] disagree, but then stopped himself; we don't know what his perspective is).
There does seem to be some bond formed between the victim's soul and the demon that inhabits the vampire, but the exact nature of this bond is unclear. I've once heard it compared to people getting new personalities after having a stroke.
Heck, in Harmony's case the vampire actually turned out to be a better person than the human.

Constant refs to this are made in both BUFFY & ANGEL eps. As I understand it, if you don't have a soul, you are basically evil (and completely selfish).
Harmony, for eg, is in several situations where she backstabs Angel & Co, her excuse being cause she's a souless vampire. Being souless takes away your morals; you no longer care about anyone else.
However, as Dru says in a BUFFY ep, they are capable of love. I suppose that all this means is that the emotions of remorse and guilt are not experienced by vamps.

Ok, so if you're souless you have no morals, but other aspects of your personally are still there, you just don't care about others welfare anymore (unless it serves your interests).

At least as a vamp, she's directed, and willing to be nice/respectful to people who're nice to her. Human Harmony used to stab people in the back just for kicks. Especially when they were nice to her.

Yeah, but presumably she did have a conscience when she was human...which she probably chose to ignore (think of all the souled humans out there who do this both in the Buffyverse & in real life - Lindsay, Lilah etc. You can have a soul and choose not to pay any attention to it!
