The UN was sponsoring peace negotiations in Geneva during a "cessation of hostilities". At the negotiations was a delegation - chosen in Ryadh - of "rebel fighters". Unfortunately, the Kurds were not included at the table.

In any case, the cessation of hostilities (it was not a full cease-fire because the USA didn't want one) did not include recognized terrorist organizations like al Nusra (al Qaida in Syria), so military action against foreign forces and terrorist organizations was allowed to continue. The USA consistently asked that Russia not target "moderate rebels". The agreement between the USA and Russia was that the FSA and other moderate rebels were supposed to separate themselves from al Nusra, so that the moderate Syrian rebels wouldn't be targeted during strike against terrorists.

Russia withdrew a substantial number of fixed-wing fighter jets during that time, and the number of airstrikes dropped considerably, especially in NW Syria and around Aleppo, where al Nusra and the FSA were most active (and most commingled). However, much of the Palmyra area - in southern Syria- was freed from ISIL.

In reality, the FSA never separated from al Nusra. During the lull in airstrikes, al Nusra and ISIL were re-supplied with TOW missiles etc from Turkey. The comment from the field is that ISIL and al Nusra will have a few FSA members embedded in their ranks to raise the FSA flag, and continue their operations under cover of FSA. However, a recent "FSA" video - which shows heavy weapons like howitzers, tanks, APCs, and TOW missiles (not just 50-cal machine guns mounted on pickup trucks)- also shows the fighters raising the ISIL forefinger.

So, since the Saudi-picked rebel negotiators left the table, and now that al Nusra and ISIL have been re-supplied from Turkey, it's back to fighting.

About 10-15% of Aleppo is still under ISIL/ al Nusra control. But the new focus seems to be the self-proclaimed ISIL capital of Raqqa.

USA spec ops, embedded with Kurds in NE Syria, are advancing towards Raqqa from the east but appear to be stuck in Manbij. At the same time, Russian spec ops, embedded with the government forces of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) are heading towards Raqqa from the west, but need to take the Tabqa airbase first, so both fighting units seem to be stuck at intermediate points.

One comparison if Berlin 1945, with Russians and western allied forces both racing towards the German capital.

In the meantime, Russia is once again (as of two days ago) supporting the SAA and Kurds in NW Syria with bombing runs and missile strikes. Assad acts very assured that he will win in the end. However, he needs to negotiate in good faith with Kurds and Sunnis in order for peace to come to Syria.

Numerous civilian casualties’ as terrorists attack homes in Syria – Russian military

Terrorists groups in Syria have carried out attacks inflicting “numerous civilian casualties” in several Syrian provinces, said the daily bulletin of the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation at the Hmeymim airbase. Jaysh Al-Islam group, which claims to be part of the “moderate” opposition, as well as Jabhat Al-Nusra and Ahrar Al-Sham jihadists, shelled residential areas with multiple rocket launchers and mortars, the statement said. The areas attacked were in the provinces of Latakia, Damascus, and Hama. A Syrian Armed Forces checkpoint in Homs province was also targeted. There were five ceasefire violations in Syria, “including four in Damascus province and one in Quneitra province,” the bulletin said. In the meantime, the total number of settlements that have joined the ceasefire rose to 150, after “truce agreements have been reached with representatives of two inhabited areas in the Aleppo and Daraa provinces,” the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation added. The Russia-US brokered ceasefire in Syria came into effect on February 27.

Why, because your allegiance is not to the truth but instead to Putin’s agenda.

Update(1905ET): After several days of radical Sunni Islamist militants targeting religious minorities in Syria for mass killings, mainly in coastal areas, the mainstream media has belatedly begun to cover it (as the killings are growing to the point of getting too hard to ignore). Some correspondents estimated that there are thousands dead and wounded, mostly Alawites but also Syrian Christians among them, as post-Assad Syria unravels under Hayat Tahrir al-Sham's (HTS) Jolani.

"The death toll from two days of clashes between Syrian security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar Assad and revenge killings that followed has risen to more than 1,000, a war monitoring group said Saturday, making it one of the deadliest acts of violence since Syria’s conflict began 14 years ago," The Associated Press reports.

The jihadists, which include foreign fighters as well as ruling HTS members, in some cases are simply going into the homes of non-Sunnis and massacring whole families. The terrorists haven't been shy about uploading their killings on the internet as well as in livestreams. Men, women, children, and even babies are being brutally murdered.

"The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in addition to 745 civilians killed, mostly in shootings from close distance, 125 government security force members and 148 militants with armed groups affiliated with Assad were killed. It added that electricity and drinking water were cut off in large areas around the city of Latakia," AP continues.

But instead of calling out the obvious ethno-religious genocide unfolding, the European Union had the audacity to issue this statement:

The European Union strongly condemns the recent attacks, reportedly by pro-Assad elements [LIE], on interim government forces in the coastal areas of Syria and all violence against civilians.

But the truth has been summarized by a priest of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is the predominant Christian faith of Syria and the Middle East. "As you see the unfolding tragedy in Syria, keep in mind, this is your tax dollars at work. This was brought to you by the US government, the State of Israel, and Turkey. They said Assad was bad. This is what they replaced Assad with," Priest John Whiteford said on X.

Meanwhile, Syrian religious minorities are trying to escape to the Russian air base which is taking in as many as it can.
