The Paris attackers' attempts to suicide-bomb last Friday's Germany-France soccer match in the French capital pricked Germans' security bubble. The twin threats struck at the heart of popular culture in Germany, soccer's World Cup holders, unnerving a people who felt for years that their opposition to the Iraq war and their low-key involvement in Afghanistan meant they would not be targeted.
"After the cancellation of the international match, our Germany is no longer our Germany," columnist Franz Josef Wagner wrote in mass-selling daily Bild's Thursday edition. "I'm not a hero, I'm worried."
After years of feeling insulated from militant Islamist threats, Germans are worrying that they too could be subject to attacks like those suffered last week in Paris.
Bild said several attackers planned to set off multiple explosives in the Hanover stadium on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Germany had only avoided a major attack "through a mix of competence and luck", adding: "We cannot guarantee that there won't be a terrorist attack in Germany."
Germany's failure to bust the Hamburg al Qaeda cell that planned the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 marked a bad blip in its record, but the fact the strikes took place in the United States did not ruffle the national sense of security.
Germany stepped up its guard against Islamist militants, improved coordination between its numerous state and federal police and security agencies, and uncovered periodic plots, escaping the kind of al Qaeda-inspired attacks that killed 191 people in Madrid in 2004 and 52 in London the following year.
Now, the sudden realization that they too could be hit has shocked Germans. They have not suffered such a threat since the 1970s, when the ultra-leftist Red Army Faction (RAF) attacked the political and business elite in a campaign of assassinations and kidnappings that peaked in the "German Autumn" of 1977.
Then-chancellor Helmut Schmidt's response was uncompromising. After three high-profile killings by the RAF that year, he insisted: "The state ... must respond to this with all necessary severity."
Schmidt won widespread praise for refusing to bend to RAF demands for the release of jailed guerrillas. The group pursued its campaign, but never with the same potency, and its attacks petered out over the next two decades.
DON'T MENTION WAR
The present government does not share Schmidt's impulses.
Forged by the post-war experiences of economic growth, peace and reunification, the words and demeanor of today's cabinet members reflect Germans' aversion to fighting fire with fire.
While French President Francois Hollande vowed on Monday that "France is at war", German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said a day later that speaking about a war against Islamic State only helps the group behind the bloody attacks in Paris.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has appeared drawn and exhausted after the Paris attacks, declaring in the immediate aftermath that "we are crying" with the French people.
Her government, a coalition of her conservatives and Gabriel's Social Democrats, has sent arms to Kurds fighting Islamic State militants but is not ready to join air attacks on the group in Syria, despite pledging solidarity with France.
Merkel also wants to avoid undoing Germany's attempts to integrate its Muslim immigrants, who are mainly of Turkish origin, unlike the North African Arabs that moved to France.

The terror cell was planning to set off three bombs inside the stadium during the game, according to Hannoverische Allgemeine Zeitung.
They would be smuggled into the stadium in vehicles authorised to enter, or by cell members with tickets.
Another bomb would be hidden at a bus stop, while a fifth would be placed at a train station by the female member of the cell some seven hours after the first blasts.
It was not a planned suicide attack: the woman was to leave on another train after placing the bomb.
Police say they found no explosives despite an all-night search of the stadium and city. But Bild newspaper has published allegations of a cover-up, claiming a paramedic witnessed explosives hidden in an ambulance at the stadium.
The unnamed paramedic says special forces were on the scene and he was "told not to talk about it", the newspaper claims.
The report also claims three police officers have been disciplined for leaking information about alleged bomb finds.

Paris has stepped up security at key water supply sites to the capital following warnings by the prime minister that the country could not rule out “chemical or biological weapons” in the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks on the French capital.
The higher security comes amid reports of a worrying unexplained theft of chemical and biological protective suits at a top Paris hospital, write Henry Samuel and David Chazan. "Chemicals" were also among an "arsenal" reportedly discovered by police in a flat in Molenbeek outside Brussels, from where the Paris strikes are thought to have been planned and prepared. Eau de Paris, the capital’s state-run water company, has banned access to six sensitive sites to all but key personnel.

US military personnel ordered to stay away from Brussels
The US European Command has issued a 72-hour travel restriction on travel to Brussels by all American military personnel as well as civilian Pentagon employees, contractors and command-sponsored family members and dependents.
The command said in a notice posted on Saturday that "for those already in Brussels, everyone is to shelter in place and remain at home".
Brussels is home to the political and administrative headquarters of Nato, while its military command, officially known as Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, is about 45 miles to the south, at Casteau near Mons.

Brussels is in the midst of a major lockdown with hotels, restaurants and bars ordered to ramp up security one week after the Paris attacks.
Isabelle Trommer, a manager at the city's Crowne Plaza Le Palace Hotel, told The Telegraph: "The police came and told us to lock the door. A lot of people are scared. There was a rumour of two people being caught with suicide belts.
"The only people who have been checking-in are journalists, everyone else has cancelled."
The city has lifted its security alert level to four, the highest, meaning an attack is thought to be imminent.
Military patrols are on the streets to bolster the nation's already stretched police service.

You see ONEOFTHETHREESTOOGES - terrorists aren't refuges, they're only POSING as them. And they're not even Syrian, they're only occasionally POSING as them. So, not refugees, and not Syrian.
Putting European terrorism on Assad, rather than ISIS who actually ARE the terrorists (and by extension the US since we supported and armed ISIS) is so very, very stupid.
