Looking at available screen grabs and reviewing the dvd, you could very well be right. Slugs, or more the point, sharp, jacketed slugs would be quite formidable. The AR15 platform could still be a contender for creating Vera, using a flat top upper, of course. Maybe an AR10 for larger caliber. If caliber in a concern, there are .50s available. But then again, this is all speculation of a movie gun.

In the show, Jayne states that Vera could not(or barely) breach the hull but easily shoots through the windows of the carrion house which seems to be contradictory. But it is in the script so what are you gonna do?
Jayne says Vera could -barely- breach the hull, meaning she could, but it'd be after a few rounds went through the same spot, I imagine. He's sayin Vera's pretty tough (enough to go through Serenity if he tried), but sometimes not tough enough.
I'm more upset that we never see him use Vera in the assault on Niska or such luck. Though the ammo for such a weapon must be pricey and difficult to comeby outside the core's seedier parts.
IKIYO.

Jayne does use Vera right as they enter the skyplex... he shoots into the dock control center. I assume he used Vera for this because it was probably the same vaccuum proof material as the control room for the net in OMR

In the commentary Nathan says it's 50mm. I figured it was just a mistake on his part and it's actually .50 cal. I don't know diddly about weapons that big.

I just searched around for this screen cap.
Its a 12mm AA Gun, so its .47 cal (so I guess you could round up to .50 cal) if I did my math right.
So your correct that its .50 cal but its probably not a Browning .50 cal that is commonly available.
Unfortunately I’m not familiar with AAA guns of this size. But I think that most modern attack aircraft would laugh off a .12 mm bullet unless they score a lucky shot in the engine, avionics, or cockpit.

The idea of Vera is somewhat illogical, ideally a rifle firing a bullet of such a large caliber would not be a carbine, or having a barrel shortened for close quarters combat. They do exist but are generally not very accurate, the ratio of the bullet d. to barrel length makes it more akin to an oversized pistol... A real life version would probably be a semi auto barrett with custom mods, if you had the dough and perserverence for such an endeavor
