The original Japanese version is much much better as far as scare and suspense go. Why is Hollywood doing these cheap ripoff remakes? They just plug some random US actor into a Japanese movie and hope that it will work?

Hmmm...House of Flying Daggers, huh? I'm wary because I hated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Boredom. I did, however, like Hero...so I guess it's a crap shoot either way.
And funny that you mention how the original was scarier, Jasonzzz, because this one was done by the exact same director. Now I love Buffy as much as the next fan, but I think the biggest drawback of The Grudge was SMG. A cardboard cutout would've been better as Karen.

well it was the same director, so one would assume he could make a quality movie...but apparently not.
they do show cheap movies on campus, just not this movie:)

Well, I can not agree with you more on SMG and sucky performances... But the true horror here is that somehow even with the very same original Director, they couldn't stop the Hollywood machine from stripping down and oversimplify a perfectly good movie script into something that is spoonfeedable to American teenage horror "I know what you did last summer" cum "Final Destination" idiotic flicks.
BTW, brace yourselves for Ring 2 (The atrocity continues). Ugh!

dude, i know what you did last summer was SO much better than the grudge! final destination...i didn't see it, but you're probably right about it being crap.

You're all crazy. Sorry, that's how I feel. The chill bump factor was at an all time high because the same creepy-ass scares were repeated. I thought it was better than The Exorcist: The Beginning. I even thought it was better than The Ring. My logic is that you didn't have to wait for the entire course of the movie for the one scary moment. And come on, you want to argue PLOT with a horror movie? It's all about the scare, hence SCARY MOVIE. When I watch one I'm not paying attention to the dramatic depth of the actors or actresses involved. I think you have it there...
You've essentially identified the difference between a real horror movie and a "I know what you did last summer" scare flick. A scare flick is pretty much a string of "cat jumping out from behind door", "vase falling off the table", "door thumping", "footfalls from down the hall" scenes spliced together. When you take away all expectations to be entertained with a plot, story line and a sprinkle of believable characters and decent acting, you can pretty much enjoy anything. I just like to save my $11.50 and popcorn money for something decent and wait til this sort of thing appear in the bargain bin for my "cheap" thrills.

You're right. I just try and make a point to see all horror movies in the movie theater because it's the only place it has any "umph". Once I get it home on the TV, even with good sound and all, the thrill is gone. Something about the big screen, the awesome surround sound, the big room, the dark, and probably mostly the people around you. Usually if I jump in a movie at all it's because of somebody elses scream or jump or whatever, then everybody has a good laugh about it. To me, that's the experience of the movie theater.

48.9 million is not a topper anymore. It made 9/10s {39.1 millon} of it on the opening day. If a movie has a huge fall off of sales after the opening day/weekend - it is considered a failure. I doubt it will hold its #1 status much longer. There is just nothing really good out there.
Everybody that I passed when the movie was over were bashing it left and right. Making fun of the 'sacry' sound that was repeated too much, trying to figger wht the hell the editor was thinking - its transitions between timeframes was widgy at best.
