Hard to say, not many bravo performances this year. Mirren for sure and Vikander (who was really good in UNCLE, given the material). I have to give this some thought.

Which film this year will surpass female love interest + buttkicking more than Alicia Vikander? Other than Ex Machina.

Are folk who rave about the original show the same folk who are agog about Dr. Who?

I started to write an answer but something happened and it was erased. I will try to recreate it to the best of my ability.

The film that immediately comes to mind is MI:5. Vikander's robot android outshines Ferguson's Ilsa with a virtuoso performance in an independent film (it had all the mannerisms of a large production, but who's tone, pace and substance was transmitted with the subtlety of a jungle cat stalking it's prey). It was powerful and glided over the skin like a silk scarf. Ferguson delivered Ilsa with a stealthy
assurance that was barely captured on camera, it was something to see; and it nearly out-maneuvered Cruise's Ethan Hunt in it's undeniable rawness.

Vikander's Ava portrayed a cunning innocence, a lesson in showing emotionless emotion. Yes, I know that sounds weird and nearly impossible, but the subtlety of her performance is remarkable in it's ability to lull you into a hypnotic trance and you believe every movement, every breath, every glance. Suddenly you realize she pulled you into her world. I have to watch it again, even though it remains vivid in my memory. I fell for it, like Caleb, I fell for it. I was in the Twilight Zone and I loved it. I say again, Bravo!

Ferguson, I felt, was in charge. From the moment she entered on screen until the moment she exited, she was in charge. An undeniable force that commanded attention and you followed orders with a big smile on your face. These two women should somehow wind up on the big screen together. Vikander is one of the reasons why I will be seeing the Man from UNCLE. If I see Ferguson's name attached to a movie from here on out, I'm there. It is a race to see which one will be nominated for an Oscar.

Even though comparing these two films is like apples and oranges, I give the slight edge to Vikander.

Vikander needs to be nominated this year. For Ex-Machina, and perhaps also for UNCLE. Assuming 5 nominations available, which other 4 actresses would bump her out? Perhaps Mirren for Woman in Gold.

You were right, I saw it yesterday and it was meh! I did like Vikander in her role, she was quite good and in a mediocre script. So was Cavill. Hammer on the other hand was passable.

I was looking forward to it because, well Guy Ritchie has done well with films like Snatch, LS&TSB, Sherlock Holmes......also the recent success of the Mission Impossible movies (these last 2 were not only great entertainment, but well written and produced). I thought also with Vikander, Cavill & Hammer that would make a good mix.

But, as always, it's the writing. Without it, well, you get Meh!

We're simpatico here! No wonder, we have similar good taste in movies, Snatch is one of the funniest movies in modern times and Guy Ritchie is the UK's answer to Tarantino. And Brad Pitt is hilarious, especially when Turkish sends Tommy to buy a van from the Gypsies......comic gold. I've seen it at least a half dozen times, maybe 7 times.

Have you seen Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels? Similar but not as funny as Snatch.

Two thumbs up for Desperado and Antonio Banderas (No, don't do it, too sexy!) and
LS&2SB is an acquired taste, but back to Banderas, he's got a unique style, effective and always serving the story.

I liked his Zorro, of course having Anthony Hopkins as your sparring partner is not a bad thing. One of my favorites is a little film called The 13th Warrior, a combination sword epic and horror movie. Very well done with Banderas, Omar Sharif.
There are some lesser-known actors that are quite good and complete the story of the Norsemen/Vikings within the myth of the film.

In particular, there's Vladimir Kulich, a Czech actor who plays Buliwyf, a king in training; and the other stand out is: Dennis Strohoi, a Norwegian actor who plays Herger, Buliwyf's right hand. This may not be a critically acclaimed film, nor is it a popular film; but for me, a notorious sci-fi, fantasy, sword and sandal fanatic; it is fun because it has all the elements - swordplay, heroic stands, epic battles, kings, hand maidens, local myths, oracles, prophecies, mystic utterances, etc. Yes, there is an overabundance of testosterone, but there are some strong females - Viking women. But make no mistake, this is a Banderas vehicle.

I don't care for Tarantino though I love "Desperado" but again I also happen to love Antonio Banderas.
