This is going to be it for a while until I can get the next story in the series to a point where I actually like what I've written. I don't know how long that will be, maybe a few days, maybe longer.

Thanks for the great support while I've been writing this. I really expected a lot more people would be upset. I was told by one very upset person who knew what I was going to be writing that people would stop reading and just hate me. I'm glad that person was wrong.

People handle this type of trauma in different ways, and I really wanted to explore what would happen if it happened to someone in the Firefly 'verse.

As always, please let this play out to its end. Right now there are quite a few stories left in this series. You may be surprised, or not, where it ends up leading.

This chapter ends with a bit of a shock, sorry, but, I do love drama :)

Some things will become clearer, or more confusing to some, as the stories and chapters go on. But don't worry, everything will be explained eventually.

Chapter 5

----------

Simon didn’t know what to do with himself. It had only been a day; a day without his wife by his side, waking up beside him, snuggling into his arms, sighing against his mouth as he kissed her good morning.

After cleaning the infirmary, reading a few medical texts, researching treatment on traumatic events and walking aimlessly around the ship, Simon was at his wits end.

He needed to speak with Kaylee. He needed to help her. He rounded the corner into the cargo bay and stopped short as River blocked his path.

“River?” Simon blinked. He mentally chastised himself as he looked down at her. Her hair in disarray, her skin pale and her eyes red-rimmed. He’d been so wrapped up in Kaylee for the last few days, he hadn’t taken the time to see how his psychic sister was handling everything had happened. “Mei mei? Is there something you need?”

“You need more than I do.”

Simon sighed. He was really in no mood to try and decipher her cryptic words. “Yes, I

I've been there. It's easier to pretend it didn't happen, but she will need to deal with it eventually. The longer she waits, the worse it will be, and now it will shatter her trust in Inara, too.

Very well written, I hope to read more soon.

Oh Kaylee's going to be unhappy with Inara if she remembers what happened and figures out that Inara's keeping it from her...

Another amazing work of art from you! I know you sent it to me last night to read over but I'm sick as a dog and I read this before I even noticed that it was sitting in my inbox so I'm just as surprised as everyone else!

>>"He will be okay. Safe. Loved. Protected. Bright eyes. Dark hair. Pretty smile."<<

I know you know what I'm thinking. *squee*

I love this story and all the ones before it and I can't wait to read more after this one, so please update it soon!

That she's describing her brother?

She may never know . . .

Again an excellent job, though I can see a lot of truely awful fallout when Kaylee wakes up to the fact of what happened to her. Keep up the great work, I'm always excited to see another of your stories pop up. Best of luck in working out the kinks you aluded to with writing the future stories.

“For now.”
-I really love that line. So very River.

"It wouldn’t be yours, if I’d stopped it. It wouldn’t be –“
-Now what about that bit...what wouldn't be Simon's? I do remember some baby foreshadowing in previous chapters....

Missed Mal in this one--bring him back soon? Keep up the shiny writing.

Interesting. Very much so. I just get chills down my spine when I think of that hwoon danh raping poor Kaylee... Mal shouldn't have killed him so quickly.

Is it Simon's? Please let it be Simon's.

Also... Inara is just digging an enormous hole around her and I'm concerned that the walls will cave in any minute...

Well written.

You know I just love all the speculation. Keep it up. :)

There's lots of little secrets that abound and no one has discovered one of them. Maybe that will just mean everyone will be surprised when it comes out :)

>truely awful fallout when Kaylee wakes up to the fact of what happened to her

That's a happy little understatement. I actually have that scene mostly written. The story its in will come with its own warnings.

>Missed Mal in this one--bring him back soon?

He's in the next story. Don't worry, there is lots for him to do, and lots of surprises in store for the poor Captain - well the whole crew - too.

I am so happy this ended on an upbeat note for Kaylee. The notion of her not being her usual happy self is too painful to imagine and it doesn't feel right to have her parted from Simon. I can well understand Zoe's frustration with River, not being helped of course by River being less than coherent when she rambles all doom-laden and such. It was disconcerting that River's last words to Zoe as she left her was, "For now". Oh gulp, that didn't sound good. Ali D :~)

Amazing! You know, I am totally loving this story and the way with which you are handling such a sensitive topic. I too worry that Inara is going to really get herself so tangled in a web of lies, she will become trapped, but I'm hoping that a certain, swaggering captain might be able to draw her out.
And once again, I love your Simon and River interactions - whether they're teasing each other, fighting or being supportive, you write them dead on! Post more quickly!

Don't know who to feel for more: River, with her vague premonitions; Kaylee, with her lack of memories about the rape; Inara, who's trying to save Kaylee the heartache; or Zoe, who is stuck with the problem of knowing more than some but still not aware of the big picture:(

Still...this is mighty addicting stuff you have here, Leiasky. Honestly think you're channelling Joss here;)

This is some amazing writing, I think you are doing a great job dealing with the whirlwind of emotions they are all feeling. Glad to know there is more coming!

Awesome, but in a really sad way.
Awesome.

Oh wow, awesome ending. Keep up the good work. Sorry you're getting so many emails that I commented to you lol.

“Couldn’t stop it.” Tears dripped down River’s cheeks and her fingers trembled as they squeezed his hands. “I wanted to, but – it was supposed to happen. It wouldn’t be yours, if I’d stopped it. It wouldn’t be –“
Something about these words is comforting to me, even though it was such a terrible thing.

yay yay yay for more Zoe involvement/dialogue.

again amazing story, i can't say more than that, still can't find the right words. but that just tells you how moving and good it actually is. i feel really sorry for kaylee at this point, and am going to hope that what i think happened did not. (squee about the baby though...it IS simon's though right? oh it has to be) going on to the next story now, stay shiny!
