This is short, but I didn't think I should end such a happy story on the note that this one ends with. So the very end of this story was turned into the Epilogue.

The honeymoon is next, and unless I combine everything, it will be 3 parts. And then the fun begins - well, for me, not for the readers or the characters :)

Epilogue

“We’ll be there in a week.” Mal switched off the Cortex screen and turned to River, who was staring unblinking into the black, her legs pulled to her chest. “Albatross, plot course for -“ Mal trailed off when he noticed the look on her face. “River?”

“Don’t trust him.”

Mal sighed. They’d gone over this before. In fact, they went over this every time they took a job from Badger. She tended to get tetchy whenever his name was even mentioned.

“I don’t trust him either. But he is givin’ us work and we ain’t had work in over a month. We’re short on cash -“

“Simon will give you what mom and dad gave him.”

Mal had heard that Simon and Kaylee had received a gift from his parents. He also suspected it had been River that had somehow let her parents know her brother had gotten hitched.

Mal hadn’t asked what they’d received. He didn’t really want to know. Mal raised his hands. “He ain’t doin’ that again. Your folks gave him whatever they did for him and Kaylee to use.”

“They can’t buy forgiveness.”

Mal hesitated for only a split second, briefly wondering if that is exactly what they had been trying to do. But it didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to take their money. He was too proud. What mattered was getting back out into the Black. Flying free. Not being tied down. They’d been on Paquin long enough.

Mal set course that would take them to their next destination, not knowing, not realizing, that his decision to take this job would change the lives of his crew forever.

“Everythin’s ready.” Badger said, his mouth twisting into a wry grin. “Reynolds has agreed to take the job.”

“Excellent.” The old man clasped his hands together with

Sorry, inner geek was feeling feisty. But Niska... Forgot about him. Been reading so much of Kaynara's stuff lately I'd forgotten that not everybody had killed him.

This was pretty short though. Probably could have been part of the previous chapter

I am having a (major!) freakout here.

Ughhhnngnhnhhh...post more. Like, soon.

And...ah. Don't...um...kill Simon or Kaylee. Please and thank you. Well, I would prefer if nobody ended up dead, but if you killed Simon or Kaylee without killing the other one too, I don't think I'd ever read anything ever again.

laugh

I'm sorry, my ass is exit only. Thank You :)

Grimlock, I didn't put this with the end of the other chapter because I didn't want the mood to change so drastically. And that one ended on a happy note.

Or, if you do kill one of them, do it in true Joss fashion: quick, messy, and with the other watching helplessly.

A slow-motion scene of someone trying to intercept the bullet/spear/flamethrower and failing is always nice, too.

I mean, think about it: kill off Kaylee and watch Simon, Jayne, and Mal have the most kick-ass revenge mission EVER. It would be epic.

Leiasky,
I've been reading and lurking here for a while. You are awesome! I wish I could write half as good as you do.

I am seriously worried what kind of mutant plot bunnies have taken up residence in your mental bunny hatch, Leiasky...I really am.

River's thoughts on Mal's decision to take another job from Badger (after getting f-ed over for the protein bars in "Serenity," getting stabbed because he got into a fight at a party Badger got him into during "Shindig," and the Battle of Sturges graveyard doublecross from "Those You Leave Behind") is saddening cuz River is definitely having a Cassandra moment with her warnings going unheeded:(

Still...can't wait to find out what horrific and flame-inducing stuff you have lined up for our BDHs to suffer through;)

>oh god, is he gonna kidnap simon?

Nope. He orchestrates, he doesn't do the dirty work himself...

>can't wait to find out what horrific and flame-inducing stuff you have lined up for our BDHs to suffer through;)

Just remember you said that when you read what happens :)

Oooh, bad stuff keeps happening and the mention of Niska is never good. I loved River trying to warn Mal, no doubt knowing only too well that he would not listen and why. Little bit puzzled that if Simon is part of the soloution she sees in her mind that she does not go to her brother and tell him. As for Badger, the awful things that should happen to that slimey creep are too messy and numerous to mention here. Can't wait to see what happens next, Ali D :~)

>Little bit puzzled that if Simon is part of the soloution she sees in her mind that she does not go to her brother and tell him.

He can't be a part of the solution too early or he won't be part of the solution at all.

The future can be changed - and not in a good way - by any one of the crew acting out before its time.

All right, here comes the angst!!! I am so excited to see what you do with all of this build up, scary Niska, scared Badger, unheeding Mal, omninous River, it's getting good!!! Glad you're gonna give us a sweet little lovefest with the honeymoon before you rip our hearts out with what ever maniacal plot you have dreamed up! Nice teaser for us to be all worried about!:D

Badger is such a ruthless little cunt. I hope River kicks his ass.
