Kaylee rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand as she replaced the tools in their box. It was the middle of the night on Serenity and she had been working for the last few hours on some repairs that just couldn’t be ignored any longer. She yawned and flipped off the lights, stretching as she wandered down toward the passenger bunks. She was so tired, she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d actually spent the night in her own bunk.

As she made her way toward Simon’s room, she let her mind wander, thinking about how wonderfully happy life had been for the last few weeks. When she wasn’t working on Serenity, or cleaning or stowing supplies, she lay in Simon’s arms, making up for lost time. She smiled happily as she rounded the corner, distracted with thoughts of slipping into bed beside Simon, and then gasped when she ran right into River.

“River! Sweetie? Are you okay?”

“Fine.” The younger girls head was leaning against the wall.

“It’s late. You should be in bed.”

“Couldn’t sleep.”

“Do you want me to get S –“

“You’re going to have sex.”

Kaylee blinked at River’s forwardness and then giggled. “Well, I’m sure Simon’s asleep right now.”

“You’ll wake him up,” River said with a certainty that made Kaylee wonder if the girl didn’t sit outside the door with her ear pressed up
