Thanks to everyone who stuck this out and continued reading. This is pretty long to be an Epilogue and though I did want the story to end with the last chapter (more dramatic that way!) I decided to post the true end to this little tale.
To TamSibling, congrats on figuring out the ‘come full circle thing’ which is exactly what I intended when writing this chapter.
Hope you all enjoyed reading this story as much as I enjoyed writing and sharing it with you.

Epilogue
Serenity was a ghost ship. There was no laughter echoing through the halls, no pitter patter of tiny feet in huge combat boots. There was no gunfire, no shouting, no arguing, there was nothing but an eerie, uncomfortable silence. It was a metal shell gliding through space, much like the occupants who called the ship their home.
It had been a week since Simon had been taken away and not one single member of the crew could rightly admit that his loss hadn’t affected them. As much trouble as the stuffy doctor and his crazy sister had brought upon them, they were crew, they were family, and they’d had a place on the ship.
Mal, even at his crankiest, couldn’t ever admit to feeling so helpless. In the past, the ship had been filled with laughter, jokes, and a fair bit of ragging on their resident, uptight doctor. He was such a fun and easy mark. But now, as he walked through the empty hallways and looked at the solemn faces of those Simon had left behind, Mal couldn’t remember the last time he had felt so – lost.
Kaylee sat with Inara, as the Companion forced her to eat, pushed her to go on with her life. The young mechanic existed solely for her girl now. Serenity. Her baby; the love of her life - until she had met that stuffy Core doctor. The bright light of life was gone from her eyes, and with it had gone Serenity’s never-ending glow. Stupid shipboard relationships. Mal hated them even more now to see his lil’ Kaylee’s bright eyes dimmed because of a lost love.
He knew Kaylee had played back Simon’s m
Seriously. I've been in a funk all day over this story, and...you made me happy again.
I love you! And I love this story!! :-D
I'll talk more later once I get over the "OMG THIS IS THE HAPPIEST THING THAT'S HAPPENED TO ME ALL DAY!!" deal.

And now my wife is wondering why I'm grinning like an idiot.

More smut now?

Leiasky, I loved this story - even the smutty stuff. I actually had thought up a conversation today for this epilogue if it had gone the other way. It was very angsty with a very angry Kaylee railing against everyone and possibly leaving the ship. I'm glad I can save it for another occassion now.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
All better now!
Great stuff!

Rippin' good story, thanks so much!

That was my intent all along, I just happened to enjoy the uproar ending the last chapter created.
>More smut now?
Good god. Some of my stuff does need a plot every so often! I've got 10 short stories all done that you'll just love. No, I'm not posting them all at once.
>You are amazing....a wonderful arc, a plunge to the depths and heights of emotion....
I think a story is successful if a reader feels that way. Thank you.
>why can't more people like you end up as screenwriters!
Because then there would be no need for fanfiction!
>I actually had thought up a conversation today for this epilogue if it had gone the other way
I'd love to hear about it :)
>Both endings are wonderful,
There really were not two endings.
>One little story = one huge uproar.
Yeah. Really came as a surprise to me that's for sure!
>Yay! happy Kaylee gets to snuggle and warm SImon up again.
Pretty much how the sequel starts . . . :)
Thanks everyone for the comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the story, even if it gave some of you heart failure to think Simon died :)
Despite the relief that Simon is back, both Kaylee and River were abused pretty badly with the drugging and the lying and the sneaking off despite promising otherwise. I can imagine there being some fallout from that somewhere down the line.

I was really dreading reading this since I was so very scared that Simon was dead, but I just had to know the end.
Thank you thank you thank you, for /such/ a fantastic story, and for posting am epilogue to explain things to people like me who clearly couldn't come to the right conclusion on their own ;)
I have a feeling that today will now be one of those where I wander around humming and smiling at inexplicable moments because of this...
You are fantastic!
I commented on the last chapter just before I read this, and while I have to say the points I made about Mal or somebody just shooting Adrian after he had lifted the landlock are totally still relevent, this was a great ending.
It probably saved your skin too, since it sounded like some of the people who commented would have been out for blood if the good Doctor had really been shuffled off. That kind of thing can be forgiven in a TV series, where real people play the characters and sometimes have to leave the show, but this is all written and you (and more to the point, we, the readers) have no one to blame but yourself when someone is killed.
Not to worry. Everything ends to our satisfaction, and we look forward to many more well written tales of thrilling heroics during which Simon doesn't die.
Seriously though, great work. Thanks.
My feelings on God-fearing religions in general.
Yay for being at least partially right, though I didn't get that there were cryo containers in the room Simon was led into (I did have my suspicions).
Another excellent story, Leia, and I am all but done with everything you have ever written.
I wonder if I would be shunned even more for writing a S/K/R fic. Hmmmm...
>It was very angsty with a very angry Kaylee railing against everyone and possibly leaving the ship. I'm glad I can save it for another occassion now.
And she has finally written that story. The first in the Trilogy of stories that begins with the idea above is called 'A New Life.' Check it out. It's excellent.
