Firefly: "Fathers and Sons--Part 1"

Disclaimer: If I weren't just a poor college student and could finance the series myself, I would, but I can't. So all I can do is just play around in Joss Whedon's 'verse. Also, I don't know a lick of Chinese so I haven't bothered to put the translations because they're probably horribly wrong. If it were Japanese or Latin, well, that'd be another story...

"Mr. Tam," said a pleasantly pitched, genial voice from the shadows that startled Gabriel Tam. He turned from the window where he'd been watching the rain fall and spied a figure emerging from the hall. He was tall, with a dark, round face and short hair. In contrast to his dark skin, the man wore a loose, white tunic and trousers, and his wing-tipped shoes made no sound as he stalked across the carpet.

"Who--"

"Who I am is of little importance, Mr. Tam," said the man pleasantly; his eyes roaming around the den lit only by the dying fireplace. "The reason for my calling is. I know of your plight, Mr. Tam; ostracized by your so-called peers; losing the high-profile cases your firm would usually take. I know of what the Alliance has done to exploit your situation, all for the promise of returning things to normal once your children are captured. And, I know of your recent change of heart."

"It seems you know many things," coughed Gabriel, who'd been thoroughly nonplussed at the man's appearance.

Gabriel didn't like the smile the man gave. It was too polite. No one should be so polite. "Knowledge is my business, Mr. Tam, and it just so happens that my knowledge might be service to you."

"Really?" asked Gabriel. He smoothed out his fine, silk robe and narrowed his eyes to scrutinize the

Another amazing episode. :)

I never know what to say to these because there's just so much going on.

I adored the beginning with Chuckles and River, then the dinner and the wedding. I loved the involvement of the Tams and that you decided not to make them "evil". And the show-down, the moment where Jayne shoots the girl, that was great. Typical Jayne, and so appropriate in that moment.

Now I can't wait to see what exactly it is that's wrong with River...

I cheered when I saw this posted and I cheered even more reading it. I love this series!

Absolutely fantastic as were your other 4 fics. My heart is in my throat for River and I'm eager to see when all the secrets about Kyo come out.

Your original characters fit the 'verse so well and the pacing is great especially considering how much happens here.

No justification needed for any of the events in this chapter. A well written piece of fic needs no excuses and this chapter is definitely well written.

Thank-you for posting so speedily. After the other four chapters going up in one go I assumed we'd have to wait weeks for this. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Loving this series!

Okay, now that I've actually read this, it's time for the acolades.

The stuff with the ring wasn't overly sappy, the wedding was sweet and hilarious, and I honestly can see all of it happening.

It's hard to talk about the writing style with these stories, because it's more like watching them happen than reading them. Your writing is very visual, and that's pretty rare. In any case, it works wonderfully.

I like how Simon's character is evolving. He knows how to shoot a gun now, for heaven's sake. He's starting to accept River as a person who can make her own decisions (with a few bumps along the way, of course).

Ah yes, River and Kyo. Gonna be mighty interesting to see how they work all of this out. They are so right for each other, it's almost scary. Loved Kyo's little trick with the space suit. That's a pretty popular method of sneaking up on invaders on that ship, isn't it? Works, too. :)

Serenity is a flying embodiment of Murphy's Law: if anything *can* go wrong, it will, and usually all at once.

So...when can we expect Part Deux? ;)

Excellent, excellent tale. I'm completely hooked and looking forward to your next installment.

There was not too much sap with the ring either. :)

Excellent....riveting....keep it coming....

But...since I love to nitpick...I know River doesn't have the flu, but if she did, and Simon suspected that it was the flu, he would give antibiotics. The flu is a virus, and antibiotics would be useless.....sorry, I'm a pharmaceutical chemist, so pick, pick, pick....your story is so close to perfect, I must find something to pick

Thanks for all the shiny comments, I appreciate them! I just updated part 2, which took a little longer than I thought, cause I had to rewrite some parts.

Thanks for the nitpicking about the antibiotics too. There's a reason I'm not a science major, haha.
