In the Game

by HawkMoth

Here they stood yet again, facing each other across a line that had been erased and redrawn more times than Inara cared to count. This was far from civilized discourse. It was low, mean and petty. They both knew it, and neither one of them could help it. The crushing inevitability of it tore at her heart.

"Maybe you shoulda stuck with your wiles," Mal said in that softly dangerous tone that simultaneously thrilled and frightened her. He smiled coldly, convinced he'd had the last word as he turned and walked away.

It was his standard method of ending an argument, and she was sick of it. "Don't put this all on me, Mal," she called out, struggling to keep her voice under control. When he swung back to face her, she persisted. "You know you haven't been after serious work in a--"

"Serious work?" He stepped forward and raised an accusatory finger. "You wanna know what--if--I--" His mouth snapped shut and he glared at her, looking stung and smug all at once.

She suddenly recalled something he'd said before things had gotten truly heated, and realized this wasn't simply about them. Some other conflict was simmering inside his head. "What?"

His expression grew wary. "Nothing."

Inara was convinced he was going to storm off, but he stood his ground as if daring her to challenge him again. She held her tongue, though, feeling as weary of their bickering as he now looked. For a few moments they held each other's gaze, maintaining

Absolutely *adored* this Hawkmoth. I love the way you write Mal and Inara. You capture them perfectly and this is definitely a scene I wish we had seen in "Trash". I feel quite excited at the impact your addition will make to this site and look forward to more of your wonderful tales. *Xiexie ni*, Ali D :~)

Masterful, Hawkmoth, but I'd expect no less from you. Thanks. A great read. And - hey! - you didn't make me cry this time!

*insert sqee-ing here* Read this last night shortly after it was posted, I think (second reader, in fact), but pesky spouse kicked me off the pc before I could review ... Lovely story, as always from you. Your Mal is a dream (just what I'd expect from someone who could capture him perfectly in a single exchange of dialogue - you know which one I'm thinking of *g*), but most especially love your Inara. She's a tricky one - many writers come close, but in the end invariably make her weak, or too needy, or otherwise ridiculously out of character. But here - just grand. *sigh* This was a lovely scene, well-imagined and well-played out. HurrySundown

Wow...it's so nice knowing just how Inara got involved in the plan to scam Yo-Saf-Bridge, wonderful! :-)

Nice story!

I was just wondering...Did Mal find the needle, too?

Thanks for all the comments, folks and warm welcome, Ali!

*waves at Kispexi*

HurrySundown: Should I know who you are, hmmm? C'mon, tell me which bit of dialogue you're referring to!

Jahzara: That thought crossed my mind a bit too late. I figure if Mal had come across it (given my scenario) he would have dismissed it as something "Companiony" such as a contraceptive or aphrodisiac or some such. Or perhaps Inara brought in on board much more secretively, or at a slightly later time.

Works for me...
