“Come in,” Inara called as the chime rang. She set down her tea cup and stood as Kaylee walked into the lavishly decorated shuttle.

“Hi ‘Nara. Didn’t interrupt, I hope?” Kaylee said a bit shyly, causing Inara to open her arms and indicate that she sit.

“Of course not,” Inara settled back onto the couch once Kaylee had taken a seat. Her well-sculpted brows knitted together in concern. “Is something wrong?”

“Oh,” Kaylee fidgeted, “No – not really.”

Inara’s eyes narrowed. Something was bothering her mei mei. She had never seen Kaylee so – uncomfortable. Kaylee was never nervous – unless – “Simon?”

Inara caught the slight incline of her head and sighed. The two hadn’t been together for long, just a few weeks, but she remembered well the day Kaylee had bounced into the shuttle and told her all about their first time together. She’d been so excited and now, she seemed so – well, Inara couldn’t put her finger on it. She knew Simon was nearly incapable of having a romantic conversation with Kaylee, but she’d hoped he’d been able to get over that handicap having finally bedded the energetic mechanic. *River shrugged. She took a bite of the food Jayne had prepared and wrinkled her nose. “Dessert is much better.”*
