So where does the stairs on the right go? the cockpit is further forward then the cargo bay. Is there another small airlock down there?

I think there is another small airlock down there. On the Closer view Serenity pictures it looks like there is an airlock on the bottom of the nose of the craft.
In one episode Zoe is just coming up the stairs but no mention was made as to what she might have been doing down there.
I am thinking it is where the computer and sensor machines are stored, as well as a small airlock.

Check out the cutaway pic, it does look somewhat like an airlock, because of the opening forward of the ladder.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's nothing.
I believe Joss Whedon says during the commentary of one episode that he never decided what those stairs would lead to.
