Exile

Part Two: A Thousand Miles

by ShinyBug

The day of the Midsummer Masque dawned bright and clear, like almost every other day on Lethe. By early morning the scent of cherry blossoms had threaded on the wind through the hanging gardens into the halls of the Oubliette, mixing with the redolent spices of baking confections and roasting savory creatures for banquet. Servants rushed here and there, carrying armfuls of linens and trays of silverware and crystal, laughing as they went from the excitement that hung in the warm air.

On this day everyone celebrated, rich and poor, high and low. Come sundown, rank disappeared and masks were tied on, and The City became one huge soiree, and at its apex was the Oubliette, and Inara. After all, who knew more about wearing masks than Inara herself?

Inara and Essa were up with the dawn to oversee preparations, and Inara was once again glad of her friend’s presence, because the emotional exertions of the night before had left her bleary-eyed indeed and feeling more than slightly off-balance. She felt that morning as she dressed simply and comfortably for the day in white linen and applied a cooling serum to her eyelids, that her mask was already on, and the entertainment had many hours yet to begin.

She looked at her reflection in her dressing mirror, noting a few tiny lines around her eyes and mouth that implied years of laughter, and Inara wondered why she couldn’t remember ever laughing much. Her youth was ebbing slowly away, she realized with less concern than a Companion should feel about such a thing. She was only thirty, and still in her prime. But Inara could see a day now when that might no longer be so. And she was so tired, she admitted to herself. So very tired.

She ran her forefinger over her ivory-handled hairbrush, peripherally remembering brushing Kaylee’s hair in her shuttle, so long ago, and Mal bursting in on them. ‘Have you got time to do my hair?’ he’d asked, trying to get a rise out of her. The comraderie was what she mis

Yes, I suppose that is just the sort of beautiful, lush, not-heartbreaking part two that I had in mind! *g*

I love the imagery, and the way you invoke visuals. The whole contrast of Inara's costume and Serenity and, in particular, this line. "...her bedraggled hair dripping pearls and jasmine, her fancy silk dress, her bare and bloody feet...."

Essa is a lovely original character, imbued with that essence of a Companion, kind but far more certain of the world than Inara.

Also: Wheee, they are all happy! (Obligatory shipper moment.)

Thank you very much for writing this.

Thanks for this - beautifully written, well thought out. I love the world you created for Inara, and yes, I love the happy ending.

I really enjoyed this story and the classical references were awsome. I was intrigued however with the change in Book. Perhaps you will expand on that sometime soon.

An absolutely fabulous confection with all the right ingredients to make my little shippy heart spin with joy. So very satisfying to have a "happy ever after" for Inara and Mal. You made this so very perfect, *xie xie ni*. Ali D :~)

it had everything: faeries, kisses, strawberries, babies...and a happy ending!!! YAY!!!!!!

JAYNE AND RIVER GOT IT TOGETHER!!!! YAY!!! it's always shiny when jayne gets some lovin'

joss DID say it was all about the strawberries...

and the perfect line: "behind them came the sound of cheering from crew and kin, Jayne’s bellowing the loudest if only because there was kissing going on in his vicinity"

mix together an' you got one bad ass case of the warm fuzzies

~Kaylee’s mouth opened and closed silently, and Inara was afraid to look away from Kaylee’s eyes as Mal stepped around a high stack of crates, and then they were face to face and of course she had to look.~ Hard to choose, but that's my fave bit. The whole shiny package is a keeper, however. Loved the lead-up: 'Nara robot-like going thru the motions with Essa's aid, dancing mechanically with a charming older man who vaguely reminds her of a dance with Mal,to his whirling her near enough to the buffet strawberries so she barely overhears servants discussing who we shortly find out is KAYLEE! And...dare we hope?--could Serenity still be docked on this ~fancy ball of water~? Can 'Nara make it there in time? Then she does and they all react exactly as I want them to, at her surprise appearance. Oh my dear sweet gods...this story tugged me in all the right places. What would make it a 10? If you write the Mal/Nara physical side next, and you write it with as much or more gentle lead-up of delayed satisfaction as you wrote these two stories. You are a Sensei of Serenity tales, as far as I'm concerned. And your mythology/ Shakespeare refs are charming. Keep it all coming. The FF fans'll be the more smiling if you do!

That....was AWESOME. Ohmigosh. I was supposed to go to sleep quite some time ago, but I got caught up in this. So awesome. Thanks for writing it. The imagery in the last scenes, when Inara finds Serenity, is so vivid!

YAY YAY YAY!!! A HAPPY ENDING IN A M/I fic for ONCE!!! lol, and I mean... no lovers spats or anything yet... just pure unadultarated HAPPY!!! lol, this is such a pretty shiney shiney fic... I just loved it!!! lol, what a suprise, Book wasn't an actual sheperd... I just love how you wrote Mal... this line had me feeling all kindsa happy/sad for the cap'n “I had to watch everyone else’s happily ever afters all by my lonesome,” he said, the humor in his voice almost but not quite disguising old pain. “I figure it’s my turn now.”
damn that was a good fic!! Keep more coming like this one!!! Shepered shows his true self... Janey and River got it togather... Zoe and Wash had a little chick... Mal and Inara FINALLY HOOK UP (I swear, that man is so ruttin' BLIND sometimes) And may I hazerd that Kaylee and Simon are ummmm... how we say, romantically involved now?? :P PLZ PLZ PLZ write more stuff like this!! (stops his rambaling now)

Oh my dear ShinyBug, what a lovely story! I fully appreciated the historical and Shakespearean references. A Midsummer Nights Dream is one of my favorite plays. This was like reading a lovely tragic fairytale...and the happy ending... made my heart flutter in a very girly-girl kind of way. I'm still smiling! Thank you so much! I hope you'l keep writing.

Oh, it's so nice to give M/I a happy ending and give us hints about the whole crew! It'd be nice to have an epilogue where they pick up some of those loose ends and Inara learns the details behind some of the changes on Serenity during her absence.

Again, a home-run! Thanks for sharing it!
