Thought from the thumbnail that it might be the old one-design (been around 50 years, and still a recognized racing class). However, the Firefly (class) is a 12 footer, and this boat looks to be in the 30s.

It looks like the name of the boat may be Firefly, judging by what I can tell from the back. It also says something else. I don't suppose, Haken, that your friend got a closer look and remembers what it says?

OH! You know what this is?! It's a time artifact from 18 years in the future, and Firerly II: Serenity has been on the air for 15 years. This is from the 340th episode, where the crew takes a vacation near a time fracture, and ends up on Earth-that-was, in a sailboat! I do believe this is the episode where Mal, while skiing, actually Jumps a Shark!

Yeah the way the word firefly is written on the back of the boat looks a lot the official script. Could be a fan.
Also noticed Jaynes cunning cap right away as well hmmm...
Lurking Horror: Whooooaaaah! Back up there. Mal or anyone/thing associated with Firefly never jumped the shark! It's still the best show to not be shown IMHO.
