ENTRY #????

This isn’t for anything, just a short-story exercise. I was thinking of sending it off to Simon, but he hasn’t replied to any of my letters lately, so I’ll postpone it. It’s likely that work at the hospital has increased, and he doesn’t have much time for the musings of a fourteen-year-old sister.

I wondered what it would be like to be one of those girls, the dress-dolls in the window, a hundred street-shifting eyes on you, but not on you. On your dress. A living mannequin is designed to not exist, and yet must draw the eyes of potential customers. I don’t know if I’ve managed to underline the paradox. I think I haven’t.

"Day Job" ---The Life of A "Mannequin" on Persephone

Alt. title: "Weltanschauung"

I am a picture in a window-frame.

Flawless skin where it can be seen. My hair is as sculpted. Not one of the shadows outside the glass remarks on my eyes, remarks on anything. They won't, if I'm doing my job. They won't know anything at all. I have replaced the machines because here is no art in metal. I show how the fabric moves: we are one motion. Every week I say goodbye to us--to a dress. I remember each of them.

It's a special technique, the 'glass eyes'. We reflect back their faces in my own, their bodies in our dress. Every single one— the art of a million faces. At night, another steps into my alcove, lit fantastically.

They are dressed in the night fashions.

They, dress and performer--as we, my own dress and I--are vitally important. Remarkable facility in every facet. I am not allowed to speak of any dress after it disappears. But I can see the layers of each of us even after they're gone; I

You wonder if part of River knows what's going to happen to her, or if her little moments from early on, like the mannequin story and her poem about tea leaves (portents) are her own intuition foreshadowing for her and her not realizing until too late.

Or even more worrisome, if the occasion bright glimpses of River are moments of mania in the insanity induced by her imprisonment and abuse.

I'm not sure which interpretation is more troubling, more indicative of her unraveling mind.

I think River understands what is happening to her on some level--whether that means she comprehends, and they do have different definitions--or not is up for debate.

A question of my own: What is the purpose of keeping this journal?

So you're saying you see the more "sane" entries are not lucid periods, they're mania? Please clarify.

Well, it was just an idea. Maybe lucid is more correct, but if they were happening WHILE River is being experimented on, I doubt if they were lucid they'd be quite so perky.

So, mania, or before the experiments started. Either one is depressing.

'What is the purpose of keeping this journal?' - this is the question that keeps coming up for me. Who is her audience? - does she imagine that someone will read it or not? Simon? Her tormentors? It is an appeal for rescue or an appeal for the abuse to stop. She can't hope for an ally because she knows what will happen to them - the dresses are the other students, I'm thinking, then there's the aide who was killed. So, no-one.

Sorry it took so long to feedback by the way - I wanted to have my notes with me and time to sit down and think properly!

"After Physics" is a very early entry. Tone is very clearly differentiated in most entries...

Aliasse: Those are all possible reasons. Do you think any are likely?
The dresses are hugely symbolic, but not of people.
More dresses coming up in the next entries, so keep an eye out.

I'm going to put this more generally. Relax. Pressure's off. Just comment on whatever you like--what you see/find interesting, what puzzles you. Even just "ha!I see _____ again!", because you seem very keen to get a lifeline(pardon the pun). Right now what there is in 1-7 is a heck of a lot of set-up symbolism, and the start of some threads. There isn't a strong thesis that's findable without at least two more "sections".
That's when the exams will start in earnest, haha.I'm kidding.

You keep notes? Bwah.

I've just realized, and would like to comment for posterity:

THIS ENTRY HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH DOLLHOUSE.

I have never seen a single episode, and the short-story section was actually written before the series aired. Shows how much I procrastinate...
