What’s To Understand?

The dry air was bitter with cordite, cut by the sharp crack of gunfire echoing off the adjacent warehouses. Near the Eavesdown Docks, several of Badger’s goons were nailing away at the two men pinned down in an abandoned building.

Jayne poked his head up over the windowsill just long enough to get off several shots. He quickly ducked back as return fire tore through the wood right where his head had been, scattering dust and splinters over them. Beside him, Simon huddled low behind the concrete wall, his arms wrapped tightly around his knees and his refined features pale and anxious. During a break in the gunfire, he finally gave voice to the question he’d been struggling with.

I wonder if Joss would have gone down the route (at least if the TV series had continued) of Jayne and Simon having to square off against each other over Kaylee? I mean, the very first episode when Jayne is crouched on the stairs while Simon operates on Kaylee shows how much he really cares, and partly I think the big man sold the doc and his sister out in Ariel because of Kaylee's infatuation. Hmmn. So many possibilities, and they're not going to come to pass. Except here with us, of course!

I like it and can totally see the interaction. I have to agree with Jane about Jayne's feelings for Kaylee. I would have been an interesting day for sure.
