Everybody Needs a Hobby
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Simon finds something to do in his spare time. This was one of those drabbles that simply will not let ya go until ya give it life and set it free. Sorry if it is a bit terse or disjointed. I might come back later and flesh it out. Thanks for letting me give it wings.

Remember good, bad or indifferent, feedback is shiny.
It had started out as a joke but quickly became a personal challenge.
Simon had always had the quick hands and good reflexes inherently necessary to a top-notch trauma surgeon, but this was different. Finding the right equipment had been the first obstacle. A laughing Mal and scornful Jayne had willing provided the needed items. Finding time and space to practice away from the amused eyes of the rest of the crew had also proved a challenge, but Simon persevered. He found he actually enjoyed the practice and the feeling of satisfaction he gained as the flow between thought and bodily action became more proficient.
It was supposed to be a milk run. A “no way in hell is this gonna be an issue” meeting, but as usual things went deadly pear shaped at some point. Simon saw the trouble coming the same instant Mal did. Instinct and months of practice took over. His body assumed a slight crouching position and his hand flowed smoothly to his side. He felt the walnut grip of the revolver settle into his palm with the precision of a scalpel and a slight resistance as the barrel cleared leather, the thunder of his bullet echoing Mal’s by a mere fraction of a second.
Glancing at Mal and Zoe’s shocked expressions Simon shrugged. “Everyone needs a hobby.”

OK I am not saying Simon actually KILLED anyone, maybe he just winged em or shot over their heads. ON the other hand I see him as having the dexterity, cool head and steady hands to become a good quick draw. Humor me.

Yeah, I've kinda always liked the idea of Simon becoming a badass in some way. After all, busting River out of the Institute was mighty impressive work.
Shiny stuff.

Simon is a criminal mastermind so it's logical, considering his doctor training, that he'd at least be a decent shot too. You're right though, maybe he winged the bad guy on purpose.

the only beef is that this piece is too short- but I guess that's all you needed to tell the story you wanted to tell.

Good piece - but what's Kaylee's reaction? And I too think he only winged the man - he's a doctor, he knows where to put a bullet, from all the experience he's had of taking them out of the crew!

I know it is rather short but the silly thing kept beating at my brain until I was forced to set it on paper and get it posted.
I have been thinking about several other people's reaction to this besides Kaylee. How would Jayne and River react. Would it in any way changes Inara or Book's view of Simon. There might even be a back story here.
I will have to let those thoughts percolate a bit. Thanks again for the input.
