It was all manner of surprising to him that being dead wasn't more quiet-like. The darkness wasn't so bad, a comfort even. At least the pain was gone but he kind'a figured there should have been someone or some 'thing' to meet him. Tell him the rules and so forth. Only Jayne Cobb had thought - no, hoped - that it would be someone he recognised like his crazy Aunt May. Never met a more loosely wrapped soul than hers but the woman was kindness itself if a body was in pain or trouble and the best gorram cook next to his own ma. Ma. A twinge of sorrow struck him deep. The thought that he would never see her again hurt something fierce. Only, if he was dead surely he would be able to meet her come her time? Unless he hadn't gone Up but Down. The thought that this was *diyu* didn't upset him as much as the notion that it surely meant he wouldn't see his folks again, him reckoning everyone else would go on up to sit on one of them clouds or such. Go off to that Land of Milk and Honey.
Jayne wasn't exactly a religious man but his ma was and every Sunday without fail she smartened them up in their best clothes and dragged her brood off to chapel. She never shoved God down his throat but her example gave him a healthsome respect for Hi
