A/N:

Yes, I know that I am supposed to be gone forever. Yes I know I haven't posted the new chapter of Date Night. Yes I know that I don't really like this pairing. All that aside, enjoy!

She liked the way he looked at her. It wasn’t complicated. Simon always viewed her as something delicate, something breakable. Wash’s thoughts weren’t easily turned to her but she knew she made him decidedly…uneasy, an odd mood for Wash. Book looked on her with sympathy, mixed with a kindness that she could bask in. And Mal…Mal just looked at her like she was a puzzle. There was a good deal of love in his eyes when he saw her, but confusion and even some manipulation. He didn’t want to care about her. It was too hard.

You know, I've never really gotten Rayne, but I think this really works in a kind of sad way. A lot of people have a problem with any River pairings because they see her the way Simon does, but I could just see her rebelling against that very thing. I like that it's not some fairytale romance; it seems more like a coldly realistic, somewhat pathological sexual manifestation of all that she has gone through.

Well written and thought provoking. Thanks for sharing.
