Jayne Cobb and Zoë Wasburne are more alike than either of them would ever admit. Both had a knack for gunplay and killing. Of course Zoë always did her killing with more finesse and conscience, while Jayne did his killing like he did everything else shoot first, then find some fun. They both were loyal. Zoë was loyal to her husband, Mal, and Serenity; Jayne was only loyal to himself and coin. They both had smiles, they hid from most of the world allowing only the people close to them to see. Zoë always smiled whenever Wash called her “Cuddle Bear”; Jayne smiled whenever his mother would send him a hand knitted gift. They shared a hatred for the Alliance and Reavers. Zoë hated them because they stole her childhood; Jayne hated them because they got in his way of getting coin. Jayne and Zoë were two sides of the same coin.

“Zoë.” Jayne said as he scanned the galley for the others. “Did you get it?” He asked sitting across from her.

Zoë slid a bag over to his side of the table. Jayne examined the contents of the bag. “Good. Mal and the others they don’t know about this right?”

Zoë shook her head. “No. Kaylee almost caught me.”

“Kaylee ain’t gonna be a problem is she?”

“She doesn’t know Jayne. And I don’t see why the need for secrecy. I don’t see why…”

Jayne slammed his fist on the table. “You don’t see why? This ain’t a game woman. If anyone caught on…that would be it. All of this would be over. You don’t want that to happen?”

“Want what to happen?” Mal asked. Both Jayne and Zoë stiffened up. “What’s up with you two?”

“Nothing, sir.” Zoë got up to leave.

“I was just leaving.” Jayne responded and following her out.

Mal watched them leave with a puzzled look on his face.

Jayne and Zoë stopped in the hallway before going into their bunks. “See what I mean. They can never know Zoë.” Jayne said wickedly as he pulled out a red bean from his bag and popped it in his mouth.

She nodded in agreement and pulled out a purple bean from his bag. “They can never know.”
