Mal pinched the bridge of his nose. He should have left as soon as he'd dropped off Jayne. He would have avoided getting soaked in the storm, for one. Not to mention, he might've come back in time to stop his slightly crazy pilot from playing musical bunks.

"What I want to know," he said to everyone sitting around the dinner table. "Is why didn't any of you stop her? I understand why River would do something feng le, but that don't explain why my very sane cook, mechanic and first mate didn't stop her. You all know she's crazy!"

River, who was sitting next to him, kicked him hard in the shin.

"Son of a—,"he rubbed his leg.

"River is never wrong when she... sees things. And she was pretty stubborn," Kaylee said.

"And you couldn't radio me to ask?" the captain asked.

"It was supposed to be a surprise." River admitted, still mad at him for calling her crazy. It was one thing to hear it from the mercenary all the time, but entirely different from the Captain.

"My Gorram Ship. 'My' being the important word here. 'Sides we didn't even come here with no passengers. Not that I plan to pick up any new ones. Last time that happened I got saddled with a fed, a mysterious preacher, a prissy doc, and a crazy little girl," he jumped back just in time to miss River's kick.

"You keep tryin' to kick me like a poutin' toddler, I'm sendin' you to your room," he said sarcastically.

"Which one?" River returned, sounding very much like the teenager that she was.

"Mal, River was only trying to help. And besides, Simon hardly uses his room anymore, and having River closer to him is better, not to mention safer. What happens if, God forbid, we have another stowaway like that bounty hunter? She'd be alone on the other side of the ship," Inara pointed out.

"She'd also be able to break him into tiny pieces. Besides, you're not that far from—"

"Sir, I don't particularly disagree with you being right about this since we didn't ask your permission—"

"See! Zoe agrees wi—"

"But the deed's already don

Enjoying the story so far...but just so you know, I'm not a fan of Rayne fic. I just haven't seen anything in either the series or film that would suggest such a paring, and quite frankly, I think River would have higher standards than the ape-man gone wrong thing. Don't get me wrong. I've read some good Rayne stories, Tamsiblings "A New Life" series comes to mind, but from character standpoints, I just don't see it. Still, I'm looking forward to the rest of this story, and am enjoying it thoroughly.

Ya know...I am not sure if I want to slap Mal upside the head for almost losing out on that much money...or slap him upside the head for actually accepting it. It's a tough decision;)

Definitely gotta say you have the voices all in row, accuracy-wise. Especially the Mal/Inara foreplay fight...cuz that was "Oh snap! He didn't just say what I thought he just said, did he?!"

you know I just love reading your comments. They always cheer me up. And with the crappy past two days I've had I really needed cheering up.

Yeah, and Mal accepting the money... I was back and forth on the fence so much, but the way I saw it is that if he accepted Simon as a passenger (who was obviously Core-gent to the bone) then he would eventually accept Lady Vera, who is as I mentioned practically the Alliance. Of course all that money helped.

Awesome work in this chapter, particularly the conversation up on the bridge. Each piece of dialogue was perfectly suited to its character and I could easily see the scene play out in my head.

Mal's constant refusal made me chuckle but also gave me an urge to grab him by the shoulders and shake 'im. Glad he finally gave in, though I bet if trouble follows Serenity once Lady Vera's on board, he won't hesitate to say "told ya so" to the crew.

His comment to Inara was well harsh, but I'm glad to see some sort of niceties between the two. Looking forward to the next chapter, keep up the great work!
