Part V

“Kaylee?”

The raspy voice drew her awake in an instant and she lifted her head. Her eyes went wide as relief flooded through her body. Everything would be ok now that he was awake. She could tell him everything that was on her mind; that she was sorry for yelling at him like she had, that she wanted to hear what he had tried to tell her that morning.

“Simon!” Kaylee beamed at him and clutched his hand, unaware that she was squeezing too tight until she saw him wince.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” She met River’s own smiling gaze on the other side of the bed and released his fingers.

“It’s all right,” he said, his voice cracking from disuse. He tried to shift in bed but couldn’t move very easily and finally gave up with a pain-laced sigh.

“Do you need anything? Want me to get the doctor?” Kaylee’s eyes swept down his body; noting the brace wrapped around his broken arm, the multitude of bandages seemingly covering more of him than his own clothes.

Simon blinked slowly, as if trying to clear suddenly blurry vision. Kaylee had read all about the after effects of a concussion as bad as Simon had sustained, and was prepared to do whatever she could to make his recovery easier. But his whispered response shook her resolve ever so slightly – he didn’t want her help.

Kaylee watched with a tight smile as River held a small cup with a straw to his lips. He took brief sips, coughed a few times as the cool liquid worked its way down his bruised throat, then waved the cup away.

“I’ll be ok.

Hmm, when you said there was a problem with Simon's memory I thought it would be longer than a few days.

Poor Kaylee, she can't catch a break. Simon better make it up to her.
(And I don't mean that in a dirty way)

Please update soon!

Poor Kaylee - the girl finally comes to her senses and now Simon can't remember their night together. And what exactly was River thinking when Kaylee left Simon's side? I'm curious as to whether she's upset with the girl for sleeping with her brother or upset that she won't admit it to Simon?

Still, I can't wait to see how you resolve this.

I'm confused with Kaylee's self absorption here. Kaylee has supposedly read up all about concussions yet here she acts as if she hasn't. Simon is exhibiting classic symptoms and while Kaylee isn't a doctor she should be expecting this disorientation and not be so wrapped up in what she wants from him that all she feels is hurt that he doesn't remember their night of passion. I don't think Kaylee is being given enough credit here, she isn't selfish and would always put Simon first. I think she would have acted a lot more caring and understanding and not hurt, after all Simon is the one recovering in hospital not her. Now is when he needs her to be a comforting stable presence. Wowee! These two just don't ever ctach a break with you writing, do they? This was a perfect little twist in the story. Kaylee's line about 'by the way, we had sex,' just cracked me up. Would have loved to have seen Simon's face if he overheard THAT conversation.

I also really like Zoe continuing to guide and look after Kaylee. It's nice.

And gotta also wonder whats going on in River's head.

TEN as always. Love it. xxx

This is some great work here, Leiasky...though I am in general agreement with AMDOBELL about Kaylee's behaviour here.

Admittedly, if I were in Kaylee's position, I probably would not have reacted too much better with finding out that the person I have been in love with for months suddenly can't remember taking things to the physical level.

However, I think AMDOBELL is right in that Kaylee would subsume her pain a bit more than she has here, along with being a little more aware that Simon would be like this if she has looked over any material she could get her hands on about concussions. Could just say she read the part where memory loss was mentioned and just didn't quite fathom what it meant.

Still...I really can't wait to see how you wrap things up!

guys are a little harsh...rhis is Kaylee we're all talking about here...and the first one to go flyin' to
jump-to-conclusion-land. I doubt highly that even if you guys read a medical journal (and I have a few of 'em) once in an attempt to understand your loved one's problem you'd remember all of it?
Not a challenge to anyone in particular..just a thought.
