A/N: I have to admit, I'm glad that I managed to stump all of you with a plot twist - it seems more and more difficult to do with our group of exceptionally sharp Browncoats!

Chapter 8

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“I weren’t never that little.”

Ellie Frye smiled down at the top of her little girl’s head as Kaylee perched herself on her tiptoes, peering down into the crib at the tiny bundle of baby sleeping there.

Scooping the five-year-old into her arms, Ellie swung her youngest child around, laughing as Kaylee giggled happily. “Oh, yes you were,” she teased, tickling the little girl until she was breathless. Exiting the bedroom and moving down the hall towards the kitchen, Ellie set her daughter in a seat as she moved to fix her a snack.

“You were so tiny, your pa was ‘fraid he’d break ya,” Ellie told her, smiling big as Kaylee’s huge eyes grew larger.

“No he weren’t,” she challenged, her voice squeaking slightly. “Daddy’s always swingin’ me about.”

“Well, sure, now.” Placing a plate of fresh strawberries before the girl, Ellie sat beside her, watching with a feeling of contentment as her baby giddily clapped her hands before reaching for one of the ripe berries and biting into it. Brushing some of her hair behind her ear, Ellie added, “Your pa, he din’t know what to do with himself. He fell in love with you second he saw ya. So diff’rent from your brothers.”

Wrinkling her nose, Kaylee swallowed her most recent bite of fruit and nodded. “Well ‘course. They’re smelly.”

“So were you.” Tickling the girl’s chin, Ellie sat back and watched her as she devoured the half dozen strawberries she’d given her.

As Kaylee continued to eat, she thought about her nephew, asleep still in the next room and looked back to her mother with wide-eyed innocence. “Marcus ain’t gonna smell like that forever is he?” As Ellie stifled a laugh, Kaylee added, “’Cause Billy

Comment time! I've read almost all of your stories and am quiet enjoying this one.

I have to admit I enjoy the change for the Tam's, their not evil anymore. But poor Kaylee, slavers are no fun.
And poor Simon... now he has to worry about the wedding, Kaylee, his in-laws and everyone who'sgoing to look for them.

I have to admit, sometimes I think Simon gets the shrot end of the stick in many fanfictions. And it's pointed and barbed and it stabs him the the chest ;p But I enjoy it anyway cause you write angest and fluff so well XD

Another good chapter. My favorite part was when River told Mal that's she not some wind-up thing and that she wants to be a whole person and not some freak who knows things she shouldn't.

Here's an interesting idea. If they do track down the salvers who kidnapped them and they can't do a simple extraction, what if the elder Tams in an effort to make things right decide to buy the Fryes and set them free. It would atone them for inadvertently selling out River, and introduce a new dynamic between them and Simon.

Of course, you have the whole thing written down and set in stone. Just hypothesizing.

Tian Yesu....first girlfan has Simon be a cutter - both in his past and during the storyline set out in "Every Rose Has Its Thorns" and now you have Kaylee - Kaylee!?! - start carving on herself to cope with all the crap that's been rained down on her lately? Definitely an "Oh no...." moment of the highest order:(

And like reginaroadie, I too was all kinds of impressed with River's conversation with Mal. River's abilities are too much of extra-strength version of a "get out of jail free" card when it comes to danger facing the crew in fanfics. I would imagine Joss would have addressed this issue had he and his merry band of scribes had been given an opportunity. Maybe after someone was seriously hurt because River offering a guarantee that wasn't all that guaranteed...

I loved River telling Mal off, he deserved it for treating her like that.

I always thought Simon would be the first to crack. Oh well.

*Stunned*
Wow.
Can't say I blame her. If I lost my whole family... I don't know what I'd do.

At least Simon, with all his stress, has Eli to confide in if no one else. I still love that character. Hopefully, someone can reach Kaylee before she does more damage to herself.
