Author's Notes: Thanks to those who read and commented. Glad you're liking the story so far.

I don't write Zoe very often, so this was a good exercise for me. It's hard to get my head around her mannerisms and how she sounds. So let me know if something is off about her.

Part IV

As abruptly as it had begun, the battle ended. But Kaylee didn’t register that bombs no longer fell, she didn’t notice that the ground no longer shook. When her eyes were open, they were fixed on Simon’s face, at his dark lashes which rested against paler than normal cheeks. The tube remained down his throat and the monitor to which it was attached chimed at regular intervals. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she remembered that it was called a ventilator and that it would breathe for Simon until he was able to do so on his own.

Her eyes were dry, her fingers laced through his – cold without constant motion to warm them. She spoke to him as if he had the capability to answer her, hoped that his eyes would just pop open and all would be well again. She tried to joke and smile, but the smile never reached her eyes.

“Starting to smell as ripe as Jayne in here,” Wash quipped playfully as he walked up beside Kaylee. His eyes swept around the room, at the injured and dying that took up all available space.

She couldn’t even muster the effort to smile at his attempt to cheer her up.

“Docs say he’s gonna be fine.”

“I know.”

“Don’t believe ‘em, huh?”

“Hard to, with him lookin’ the way he does.” Kaylee’s fingers absently brushed against Simon’s wrist, carefully avoiding the

Oh, so poignant and lovely. I think it's great that it was Zoe who managed to talk Kaylee "down" as it were. I think that the older woman would understand more than either Kaylee or Simon would give her credit for.

I can't wait until Simon wakes up - angsty goodness, which I know will be masterful when written by your hand!

Oooh, I love it. So sad. I really feel for Kaylee, bless her, she tries her best.

Lovely dynamic between her and Zoe. I agree with Tamsibling, I'm sure Zoe understands plenty.

You get into Kaylee's head so well. A pleasure to read, as always.

Ten!

I thought Zoe was brilliant in this part, just the right way to handle Kaylee at this point without having the girl fall apart with guilt over something in no way her fault. I love that as transparent as Simon is to everyone else Kaylee couldn't see it, jumping to conclusions because he couldn't explain himself better. She'll learn. Ali D :~)

Gotta agree with everyone here, this was excellent! and yeah, Zoe digging the information out of Kaylee instead of Inara is a definate plus! Excellent writing, taunt, terse where it ought to be...great work!

Honestly think Zoe was the better choice for the conversation that went on here. Much as Inara's got all kinds of skills and knowledge...her track record with relationships is non-existent. That and I imagine Zoe was there for Kaylee before Inara took up tenancy in Shuttle One; may not have been the same kind of heart-to-hearts, but I can't imagine Zoe letting Kaylee suffer when she could try a kind word;)

I didn't expect Zoe to be the one to comfort Kaylee, I was pleasantly surprised at how good she did.
Bravo, great chapter.
