Jayne, Zoe, Simon, River and Kaylee were all gathered together in the seating area outside the Infirmary. Anxious expressions were everywhere and Kaylee’s quiet sobs filled the air. She was sat curled up next to Simon, leaning on him as he held her close. He wasn’t attempting to say anything to make her feel better, he didn’t need to. River was sat in the corner hugging her knees, her dark eyes on Simon and Kaylee but they were blank and empty.

“ So they was ruttin’ when they got nabbed?” Jayne asked to nobody in particular.

“No.” River said quietly.

“So what was the doin’?” He asked.

“They were just sleeping.” She answered. Jayne frowned and looked even more confused. So she decided to tell them all.

“ Inara has been sleeping in his arms since the night we all played Truth and Dare.” River said, making everyone feel slightly embarrassed at hearing something that innocent and personal.

“ She’s been suffering from nightmares.” Simon said quietly, they all had and he didn’t wish to provoke this again. Some, like Kaylee and Simon had someone to comfort them, others were used to the nightmares.

“ I saw her taking sleeping pills from the Infirmary a few weeks ago.” He said in answer to everybody’s questioning glances.

“ When I questioned her about it she said she’d been having trouble sleeping - since Miranda. After that I decided to keep an eye on her. I did notice that she was looking better recently. I suppose that’s why.”

He gave a bittersweet smile. This couple who had just made the first tiny, tentative steps towards admitting a love that could do so much for both of them could soon have that snatched away from them. They could soon be dead. All the things that would be left unsaid, all the things that would be left undone.

“ It happened for me.” He thought, looking down at Kaylee. “ And I’m so lucky to have her. After everything those two have done, after everything they have been through they deserve love. They deserve to have each other.”

“Two men.“ River’s small voice piped up, sounding d

I'm glad to see another chapter. Please don't keep us waiting.

Nice story, although as a point Niska ain't a foreigner -- he is from a different world but "foreigner" seems to have lost all meaning in the 'verse... after all the countries and cultures on the planet melded together in the NEs. Also, if "different world" was definition of foreigner, to River the entire crew (bar Simon) would be foreigners.

I do like this Inara/Mal interaction; although I keep waiting for it to disintigrate again (after all that is what mal and inara are all about: for some reason never getting to the "ruttin'" lol).

You write all the characters well.

wow, i was expecting fluff, and here you come with this awesome bit of plot and action! please, keep the chapters coming! please, pretty please! this is too awesome!

... point of interest, why didn't they try to calm River a bit before knocking her out? it seems a cruel trick to hang over her head and i can see her getting miffed about that.

I'm assuming the first man is Atherton Wing. He and Niska together can only spell loads of trouble for poor Mal. Do I feel another round of torture coming on? Don't keep us in suspense, and please don't hurt Mal too badly!!

Poor Mal and Inara, no sooner do they start to get together and reveal their feelings for each other than they get nabbed by Niska. That cannot be good! Love that the crew are worrying and trying to work out what to do next. Ali D :~)

TRUEBLUE I was thinking the exact same thing about saying he was a foreigner but I didn't want to specify his nationality at that point. I wanted River to make it clearer for everybody.
Di y'all like the description of Atherton Wing?

went back and read all of the rest of them. Great story so far...and now your getting to the action. Keep em coming.

Oh and btw I liked the description of Atherton....just enough info to let you know who he is, but you have to think about it for a second to get it. Good job.

Well..."foreigner" would work, if you take into account that Niska's cultural background is neither Anglic (UK and Commonwealth nations, USA, etc.) nor Sinic (Chinese), but Czech;)

Still...really freaky but brilliant stuff from River here, though I too think that letting River get that fair into an episode before the safety phrase is used really is kinda cruel. Though I guess Zoe and Simon were waiting for any important details before getting River to fall asleep:(
