Well, its done! Yay! All except for the Epilogue, which I'll post in a few days.

Don't expect it to answer all the questions you have though, because, really, all it is is a bookend for the Prologue.

Chapter 12

---------------------

“River?” Mal made it to the bridge in record time, Zoe on his heels. “Tell me somethin’ good.”

River didn’t answer as Zoe took position behind her, pulled down the seat and strapped herself in.

Tossing a scowl at the back of River’s head, Mal amended, “Ok, tell me anyway, even if it ain’t somethin’ good.”

“We can’t outrun them, Captain,” River said, her eyes focused on the controls beneath her fingertips.

Mal swore beneath his breath. “And?”

“The likelihood of us dying in the attempt is probable.”

Mal sighed in annoyance, eyes darting from the controls out the window and back again. “You have anything to say I want to hear?”

River banked suddenly, throwing the as-not-yet-strapped-in captain hard against the bulkhead.

Amidst his string of curses, River said, “Set the Miranda recording to play in a continuous loop.” She turned the controls hard, trying to evade yet another volley of weaponry aimed in Serenity’s direction. She succeeded – mostly.

“Right,” Mal glanced at the console in front of him, at a momentary loss as to how to do just that.

“And set our messages to play right after it.”

Mal glanced up, meeting his pilot’s eyes. “Our –“

“The ones we recorded when you didn’t think we’d escape the Reavers.”

“Before we landed on Mr. Universe’s moon,” Zoe added, her tone solemn.

“We ain’t gonna make it, are we?” Kaylee clutched her stomach as the baby continued to kick. She breathed through the pain with short puffs of air, hoping to calm

I hope you have an epilogue that shows everyone saying goodbye to each other, especially Simon, Kaylee and River. A prayer from Mal for Inara's and everyone else on the shuttle would be nice to see also.

Can't really remember much of Empire Strikes Back, so I will just assume it was something like this. :P

Took on a few unexpected twists and turns.

If we take the Star Wars analogy further we still need a "Return of the Jedi".

Now we need an epilogue not an epitaph. We need to know what happened next. I am hoping that our Big Damn Heroes don't die in your story because that would suck big time and want to see how you get them out of it. Ali D :~)

That epilogue better be the best thing you've ever written, or else! ;)

Yes, indeed. . . :)

Oh, I can pretty much garantee that you'll all want to skin me alive. . . :)

Can't comment, too shocked.

Ooh, very exciting. I could see Inara deciding to leave in her shuttle with some of the others, she's certainly strong enough to do what needs to be done. Was nice to see Wash, too. Hopefully he can help our little albatross land this bird safely. Looking forward to the epilogue. :)

Sorry folks, but the epilogue ain't gonna tell you nothing you want to hear. Now, if Leiasky might be writing a sequel - well, some of your questions could be answered!

As you know when I first read this, you were breaking my heart the entire time, but the angst you've built and the relationships you've examined are very true to form.

*mouth falls open*

...

*stays like that for 10 minutes*

...

My heart aches. I teared up sometime around the messages and I'm afraid that if I blink, I'll start crying.

Wonderfully written chapter Leiasky. The whole story has just been simply AMAZING, can't believe you've ended it the way you have!

Huh...*still reeling in shock from the chapter*

Oh...Tian Yesu....this was just jaw-dropping, Leiasky! Just the sheer amount of tension and fear contained within left me speechless when I first read this, and I really can't help but hope that the BDHs get the right kind of send off if you're gonna have them go out with a bang.

I do have one niggling complaint though: if the messages were recorded by the BDHs before their launch from Miranda - I presume the messages shown here were recorded after the crew had viewed Dr. Caron's message but before they led the Reaver fleet on a merry chase to Mr. Universe's Moon - then how would Jayne be able to comment about River's 40-to-1 fight against the Reavers if it had not happened yet? It's probably a minor complaint, but it get got stuck in my metaphorical craw.
