A/N: Damn you, Kaynara!
Okay, not really - let's just say that because I am talking to her sooo much, she's convinced me to write a lot of Mal and Inara. And I mean, A LOT.
This is for her, written after I asked for something to write about and she said, "Mal and Simon have a talk." So of course, that turned into a Mal/Inara piece. :op
Thanks to Kaynara for the beta, as well.
Please let me know what you think of this - while I feel I write Mal/Inara pretty well, I don't necessarily think I know them as well as S/K. I need encouragement or constructive criticism if you want to see more M/I goodness!

Sleepless

Mal fixed his tea wondering when exactly he’d gotten used to the bitter liquid. Considering that insomnia was his problem, he should be reaching for a stiff drink, something to warm his belly and his brain to the point of sleepiness. But no, now in the middle of the night, he brewed a strong cup of Inara’s chamomile and found it satisfied and soothed him in a way he would have thought downright disturbing only a month ago.
Smiling softly as the gentle scent of the warm tea reached his nostrils, Mal carried his cup to the galley table before lowering himself into a chair. It smelled like Inara, and Mal reveled in it. Truthfully, it was probably the memory of her that kept him drinking the stuff. Of course, he didn’t need memories anymore, not when she was sleeping not forty feet away from him on his boat. But it was early yet, in their relationship. Not a month since Miranda and all that had gone down. Not a month since all of their lives had been shattered and hastily repaired. She’d already decided not to leave Serenity – for the time being – and Mal took that as a good sign. He just needed to figure out how to get her to stay, permanent-like.
The sound of approaching feet jarred him from his musings, and Mal took a sip of his tea as Simon’s disheveled form rounded the corner. The boy’s hair was sticking up on end and his sweatpants were thrown on ha
You can't take the sky from me
LOL

Fav line was, “I was referring to a certain, beautiful Companion who doesn’t appear to be returning to the training house anytime soon.”
Good to see Simon being a bit of smart-arse.
A nice peaceful moment between them... I liked the warm, snuggly feeling at the end...mmmm I'd like to curl up with Mal mysel--er, was that out loud? *G*
I laughed at the 'no witnesses' line too *G*
Thanks! Keep writing!
You say that encouragement and/or constructive criticism is required for more Mal/Inara writing?
Ask, and ye shall recieve.
Your writing is wonderfully romantic, with just the right amount of snark and playful humor.
Your portrayal of Simon as the funny/insightful one is highly entertaining, and yet his bashfulness concerning his new relationship with Kaylee is completely in character as ever.
And the Mal/Inara? You wrote them with such... tenderness. The way they've softened around the edges in each other's presence is delightful, and the cuddling scene they have at the end - both the physical and emotional - is absolutely delicious.
Please keep up the excellent work.
That wouldn't be, by chance, a spickey? LOL.
I also love Mal's, “Whatcha doin’ all the way over there?” Awww, *hugs*.
Thanks so much for the awesome feedback!
Kaynara - of course it's a spickey! I couldn't resist!
Truly, I really appreciate everyone's positive feedback and encouragement. I'm sure there's more Mal/Inara where this came from!
Utterly beautiful work here, TS! Between Mal and Simon's bantering and the Mal/Inara scene in Inara's shuttle, I was in complete awe of how in-character and expansive all the participants were being. Though I was kinda hoping Mal would have given Simon just a little bit more heck (even good-naturedly) about his new relationship with Kaylee. Nothing like his "if I ever shoot ya..." speech from the pilot or anything, but it ain't Mal and Simon 'less they are flaunting their individual Alpha muscles at one another;)
