Girl Talk

Monday, March 19, 2007

There is no hair braiding or nail painting involved, but Inara and Zoe do enjoy their late night talks. And what do women talk about in the absence of men? Why, men, of course. Or one in particular.

Girl Talk

by Ariane

"Can't sleep?"

Zoe mustered a smile, mostly because Inara's serene presence brought out the politeness in people. In truth Zoe had not come to the kitchen for conversation. She'd come for coffee, a brief stop on her way to the bridge to fiddle with dials and pretend to have a reason to be awake at this hour. Other nights Inara's warm velvet voice and respectful sympathy were a balm and a blessing; after all, it had been a good long time since Zoe'd had an honest-to-God female friend. But tonight the sight of those black hyacinth curls at the head of the table was less than welcome.

"You're on a boat full of gorram insomniacs," she said lightly, pawing through sealed packages in search of coffee grinds. Not the package of real ones, of course. She wasn't planning on wasting an expensive gift like that on one inconsequential sleepless night. At least, not before she convinced little Kaylee that such generosity was sweet but unnecessary, thank you very much.

"Or people with too much on their minds," Inara said softly, and there was a definite invitation there. Zoe felt eyes on her back and stiffened.

"Don't gotta be subtle, Inara," she said, still pleasant but plenty serious. She wasn't looking to be a grieving widow tonight.

"I'm sorry. I only thought..." the Companion said. Zoe was fair certain it was the Companion, and not the woman, who pitched the apology so beautifully and paused so artistically. She could just imagine the graceful bow of her long neck, the dark eyelashes fluttering down all abashed-like. She didn't blame her none, just wished she'd leave the—what did Mal call them?—the wiles in Shuttle One where they belonged. "I only thought... if you wanted to talk—"

"Thanks for offerin', but—"

"I'd rather not be here alone."

The words came out all rushed and awkward, like Inara didn't know her way around such confessions. It just figured, didn't it, that the woman would go

Wow...that was quite the tale you got here, Ariane. Subtle, respectful but oh so telling for both parties featured here. It especially made me feel warm and fuzzy with Inara getting to take off the Companion mask for a a few moments and just express her doubts and fears about loving someone who has that kind of personal baggage resting with all the lost troops that were under his command;D

Very nice. and a nice filling in of Mal's back story.

Really enjoyed how you wove this story together - very creative and very well done.

I particularly liked the way you wrote Zoe here because she is one smart lady and clearly saw through what Inara was wanting, or needing, to know. Inara was possibly wondering if she had a rival to Mal's affections but afraid of ruining what they had right now by asking. Best she doesn't bring it up with Mal but keep the insight. Ali D :~)

love Zoe and Inara.. on Mal

Mal "steaming mad" if he ever found out...yea, that about sums it up.
He and Inara are not only the most stubborn twosome, but their both so private about their feelings.

I like the way you made Zoe a few years older than Mal. I've always thought this to be true, also. She seems wiser than Mal and her judgement is considerably better. (that's not saying much, I know.)

I really liked this. Your Zoe was spot-on. I've always thought she was a hard character to write, but you really captured her quite nicely.

And, oh, poor Mal. :( *shakes head sadly*

Awesome, very good concept and superbly executed. Zoe + Inara conversations are always fun, especially about Mal
