Chapter 7

-------------

Mal stuttered for a moment. “You keep in touch with –“

“Occasionally, Sir.”

“How come I didn’t know about this?”

River calmly kept her attention focused on the control panel in front of her, setting and tweaking the course until she was satisfied they would reach their destination as quickly as possible. The two engaged in a conversation behind her didn’t notice the small smile that crept onto her face as she eavesdropped.

“The amount of my business you don’t know about would astound you, sir.”

Mal huffed in annoyance. He liked to know everything that was going on on his boat, even the uncomfortable things. Made for fewer surprises. “An’ you think he’ll be able to help you locate the right people to take these plans off our hands?”

“He might.”

“Well get on the Cortex and make contact with –“

“Already done, sir.”

Mal stared dumfounded at her for a minute, knowing from past experience ranting and raving would get him nowhere with the battle hardened woman. “Were ya plannin’ on consultin’ me before you changed course?”

Zoe rolled her eyes at him. “River would have told you anyway.”

Mal sighed heavily. “Least one person on this boat respects my authority.”

Zoe put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “We all respect your authority.” She paused for effect and then continued, “Most of the time.”

Mal sighed and directed his attention to River as the chair she was sitting in swiveled slowly to face him. He knew she was simply waiting for him to speak. The girl was respectful of her captain, even if she knew what he was going to say.

“Anything I need to know?”

“Course is set, we’re a week out.”

“Can’t push the engines?”

“Kaylee still needs to make some adjustments. We’ve been pushing the boat pretty hard lately.”

Mal turned and flipped on the shipwide comm. “Kaylee, w

Oooh...Mal and Simon really like to go for the LCD when it comes to their relationships with their ladies, don't they? Definitely gonna have to really work their tuchuses off to fix these gaps:(

Still...I am really on the edge of my seat when it comes to this storyline, Leiasky! Can't wait for the last 6 parts;D

Oh, I love what you did to the S/K convo. I'm really glad they've had a few more intimate moments before the shit hits the fan, as we know it will! This is one of your angsty-pieces after all, Leiasky!

I think the tension is building wonderfully. I also love the Mal/Inara interaction and I really hope that they can find a way back to each other once this is all over.

I have to agree with Tamsibling..the tension is really working up, and the Mal/Inara side dance is really good. He does like to hit below the belt, don't he? I just keep wondering how many times
he's gonna get a chance to fix things between them.

Gotta agree with the previous two.
If I didn't know Mal's underlying intention, I would hate him so much.
But luckily I do, so what he's doing makes me 'aww'.

So much building tension and Simon and Mal really are doing what they think is best to protect those they love, even if it means being unpopular for the duration. That is love. Not just doing the easy things, not just doing whatever your partner wants or wishes, but also the difficult things that will put you in opposition - just to keep them safe. Aaaah. I also loved Maddy, clinging to Simon and being drawn to him and Simon instictively knowing what to do back. Yep, he may worry but he will be a brilliant dad. Ali D :~)

The idea that Kayleen would worry if she was going to make a bad mum - so heartbreking. Especially since we all know she'll do brilliantly. This chaptetr, as always, was wonderful. I love it all, especially the S/K moments. Dear dear Simon can be a bongo sometimes... xxx

Oh, Mal...Oh, Simon...stubborn beautiful women can be so infuriating!

love the tension and momentum you're building

waiting on the next chapter, by the way, thanks for writing canon...it's comforting, kinda like Mal's old brown coat...there's still so much that can be done with it, you're proving that here.

Mal and Simon could easily have come off as the bad guys in this chapter, but the fact they're only trying to protect the ones they love brings them back up, in my books. It's still sad to read about though.

I'm intrigued by who this "him" was that Mal referred to in his conversation with Zoe! Can't think off the top of my head who it is - can't wait to find out! Ooh, and I liked the line:

“You don’t look fine to me,” she said with a blunt perceptiveness only a child – and Jayne – seemed to possess. - It's so true! Hehehe.

On that note, more Jayne please! I feel like he - and actually River aswell - have been a bit neglected. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next chapter, and finding out if Maris can find the ship. I hope not!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I've been hugely busy lately and so the writing has had to suffer. Everything is all written but is in the process of being beta'd and along with that comes some revisions that I haven't yet had the chance to get to.

Glad everyone is still liking the story. I'm sure that will change once I've posted the last chapter . . .

My goal with this story was to ultimately write for every character, as well as some new ones, and not just my favorites. It's really challenging though I've enjoyed the exercise.

Wow... sure is a lot of Simon. I like him in smaller doses, myself. Though, really, your avatar is Simon, so what could I expect?

And, I don't know if this is just me being really tired (I read this last night around midnight, and now it's past midnight now), but all these characterizations seem weaker than you can write them (sort of a back-handed compliment).

I'd rate it a 7 now, but I'll come back later to see if that stance needs revision.

“Well, it could be worse. She could be spending all her time with Jayne.”
Hehe.

Okay, Mal and Simon are starting to get on my nerves. Sexist much? I mean, it's not like Simon is a warrior himself. I get it, and they're behaving completely in character, but errr. And c'mon, Inara, wake up. You know what the man's like. Okay, rant over. I just hope the ladies are safe, and that the Alliance doesn't target them when Mal sends them off!
