Chapter 6

------------

Mal squinted as he watched Jayne and Aaron return to the hovercraft and begin rifling through the items they’d found at the abandoned Independent compound. Mal rolled his eyes when Jayne lifted out a weapon and began to examine it with care - like a mother would examine an injured child. He spoke to it, caressed it, cooed loudly about his new toy’s ability to shoot off multiple rounds without having to cock it or reload, and more uncomfortable things than Mal really wanted to think about flew through his mind.

While Jayne was distracted with his new toy, Aaron rummaged around in a few other cases and slipped out a thin silver cylinder. Mal’d almost missed it, distracted as he was with Jayne’s childish cooing over a simple weapon. Something about this situation wasn’t right and Mal quickly determined to get to the bottom of it. As Aaron attempted to conceal the cylinder in his hand and walk away, Mal appeared in his path.

“Find something useful?”

Aaron cleared his throat to cover his surprise, and turned slightly to wave back toward Jayne, who was still admiring his new weapon. “Oh, we’re going through a few items we managed to get out of the compound before you radioed.”

Mal glanced quickly at Jayne and then leveled his gaze at Aaron. “Yeah, I’m noticin’. Anything good?”

“Mainly weapons.” Aaron swallowed thickly, nervously.

Aaron didn’t notice Zoe come up behind him until she’d grabbed the hand that clutched the small tube and lifted it. “Pretty small weapon.”

Mal took a step away and drew his gun and Jayne, who had been listening the entire time, leveled his new weapon in their guest’s direction.

“Oh, I – ah –“

“Time for some truth-tellin’,” Mal said as he snapped the tube out of Aaron’s hand.

“I –“

“You Alliance?” Zoe asked, taking a step back and leveling her gun at his chest

Love it! I love the stuff you've added with both Madeline and Mal and Simon and Kaylee, since I last read this.

I love Maddy, but I feel terrible for her that she is obviously so emotionally scarred over everything that's happened with her ma. And of course, I feel terrible for Simon, he is truly stuck in the worst position - sometimes, I wish Kaylee weren't so gorram stubborn!

I really liked this and like Tamsibling felt sorry for Simon, whatever he says damns him in Kaylee's eyes right now. Deep down I am sure Kaylee knows he is just trying to protect those he loves from harm not realising how much the thought of letting him go off into danger without her would kill her. The same with Inara. And poor Maddy, trying to sort out her feelings with the knowledge that her own mother made a weapon of mass destruction to use against the Independents. And I loved the way Mal calmed Maddy, so nice to see this side of our Cappy. Ali D

Geez... things are really going to Hell in a handbasket real fast now, ya? Loved this line, though-
'Simon stammered to find a response that wouldn’t anger her further. Finally he settled on a defeated, “I don’t know, I’m frequently an idiot, remember?” '
LOL, classic Simon Tam moment. Least he ain't tastin' his own foot as much now... but still enough to really get Kaylee all riled up. Bloody beautiful, it is.

The interplay between Simon and Kaylee is always a standout in your work, you have these guys down to second natures.
The Mal/Maddy thing is really workin' maybe the pain in the pigu captain would make a good father..one day...when he gets his head out of his and finally commits to Inara. A really enjoyable chapter. But the Aaron/Alliance connection has me worried..
Of course with Jayne in there for comic relief..cooing at the gun. You had me at cooing. lol.

Whew! Finally, some plot development, Leiasky, you had me worried there for a nano...thought we were skipping down the shippy yellow brick road...as much as I love S/K I can't fathom their unborn love child sequestering the sequel.

love Jayne's line about passengers

I know Kaylee's all pregnant and hormonal, but she's being a real bitch.
Simon's just looking out for her and their baby. He's not showing it in the best way, but she knows what he's like.

'Anyone got a calendar? I’m thinkin’ we need to mark this day. I agree with Simon.'
LMAO

the way you keep dancing around with words, i'm starting to wonder about something...i keep hoping you'll reveal it soon...but, i s'pose i could be wrong. have been before.

but i know i'm not when i say this is just fantabulous! keep posting!!!

Ooh...why do I, like kacidilla, get the feeling that Maris Kim's search for her missing husband and daughter contains a hidden agenda on top of wanting to find her child and see her wayward hubby punished for his perceived sins? Cuz this set-up has a rather Whedon-y odour of hidden but obvious secrets;)

Still...this was some briliant work, Leiasky! Definitely loved the last scene with Mal showing both Kaylee and Inara that he definitely has the right stuff to be a father with his little quasi-pep talk with Maddy. That and the scene between Kaylee and Simon in the engine room;D

Poor Maddy, it's not fair for a child to be burdened with the kind of knowledge she has of her mother's work. I liked that Mal was able to calm her down though, that was really sweet!

Jayne was great, he provided the much-needed humourous moments, and interesting information on Aaron. Has he really turned his back on the Alliance, or will he be in two minds about it later? Zoe is right to be in slight disbelief.

On to read the next chapter! But nice work on this 'un :-)

Hmm...

1. Mal (Whoa, good ending)
2. Zoë (Loved the bit about mind-reading)
3. Simon (Relationship tension I like)
4. Inara (Don't think she'd be so quick to 'attack' Mal for his entrance)
5. Kaylee (The accent's a little too heavy for me again)

Seems like I always leave off the two with the smallest parts. It's just me being lazy, mostly.

Aaron's wife scares me a little.

Maddy's crush on Simon is very cute. I hope we learn more about Maris in upcoming chapters--one of my favorite things about the Alliance is that they aren't all Darth Vadar evil; most of them think they're doing right. I'm curious as to what Maris thinks she's doing . . .

Also wondering if Mal is going to keep trying to kick everyone off his boat before the danger starts. I hope Zoe talks some sense into him!
