Blue Sun Room FICTION - GENERAL

A Berry Original Plan

Another holiday fic, but with a slight difference. A major Buddhist festival is approaching, and River considers what to do for her new family. Another near-calamitous job ensues...

Author’s Note: This came from a trip to a DIY store one May Day when I had a sudden urge to buy two tins of house paint. I walked out of the store with three large empty plant pots, three multipacks of bedding plants, a bag of compost, two fancy light bulbs and, yep, the paint. The fuschias died after a couple of months but everything else is going quite well.

This is... if I didn’t know myself better I’d say it was fluffy . It’s almost entirely in River’s POV and therefore it is fluff with long words, but... holiday fic. Fluffy . Like a Persian kitten, only not quite so much miaowing. Still, I am very unlikely to write anything so light-hearted again, so enjoy it while it lasts.

I am not entirely happy about the structure. Basically I think I may not have written enough – many implied scenes are left out (scene breaks marked by asterisks), as the focused-in-River’s-head part of me considered them unnecessary. As a result, though, the insanely-long-novel-author part of me is complaining. I would welcome feedback.

Translations should be in mouseovers in text.

Rating: PG. It has Jayne in it. Jayne swears. Sexual situations are also implied, though not shown.

Pairings: This is a River and Kaylee friendship fic within the context of a Simon/Kaylee relationship. Astute readers may enjoy the Mal/Inara undertones. According to my beta-reader, hallucinating readers may spot tiny hints of unrequited Jayne -> Kaylee and River -> Jayne, but these are unintentional.

Spoilers: for the BDM by certain... omissions, and by the fact that River is actually functioning most of the way normally. One tiny spoiler for Shindig/Safe, and reference made to not only Inara but the Tam family being Buddhist (site member and fanfic author MrsU spotted the Buddha images in their house while watching Safe; thank you, MrsU).

Disclaimer: the characters are Joss Whedon’s and the copyright belongs to Fox, Mutant Enemy, Universal etc. and not to me. This is a non-pr

I was giggling even before I got to the story itself. Hallucinating readers, indeed!

Everyone seemed perfectly in character and the Simon needing trim (and NOT his hair) made me laugh out loud. I got a few strange looks here at work.

Anyway, well done! I don't like how a lot of people write River but you did most excellent here!

I absolutely adore this! I tried to comment last night, but the site was acting up.

I think your River is absolutely spot-on and that the other characters that you sprinkled into the mix were perfect as well. Thanks for sharing some fluff - I like fluff.

Eloisa - I do love how you write! You have such a flow, and a lovely way of showing what is happening without getting bogged down with detailed descriptions, ie "Mal raised incredulous eyebrows at the very idea that a smuggler could be seen as dishonest" and right there I can picture the whole transaction.

River's POV is fabulous, and fits what she'd be after the movie. A little weird but balanced and aware of her skills.

As to your disclaimers - being a writer of novels myself (um, as opposed to a bona fide novelist, if you know what I mean!) I can understand your desire to fill in more, but the gaps didn't bother me at all. I'm curious as to what else you have in mind, because I didn't see anything lacking.

Other bits... I appreciate the details of River thinking about chemicals she needs. Either you know you chemistry or you did some research! I was a little thrown because she thinking about explosives but used this stuff to feed the plants - an intentional misdirection on your part?

The change to Inara's POV at the end was maybe a little weird because the rest of it was River playing into the Simon/Kaylee romance. But Inara's voice isn't far from River's, and Mal giving Inara a flower is just so sweet that I ate it up. :)

Anyway, I loved it, fluff though it be! I hope you get to doing more fic! (But I'm not complaining, because I still have a bunch of your original stuff to read, yay! I lost the comments I made a while back, but I'll redo it over xmas break and get it to you.)

"Kaylee was singing amid clangs of spanner on bolt, a strong tuneful mezzo-soprano that was all the better for being untrained."

For some reason, that line struck me as being especially beautiful.

Very lovely. I love the subtlety of each of the relationships portrayed--very realistic for post-Miranda.

Wow...this tale really blew me away with its pitch-perfect presentations of the crew, but your River truly had me thinking Joss had snuck into your house to write the River dialogue;D

And one has to love Mal and his ability to keep surprising people, especially Inara;)

Thank you, all!

Leiasky, TS and BEB - I'm glad you said that about River; I was worried that I might not have hit her properly; made her a little too normal, I suppose. Thank you for the reassurance. :)

M4P - regarding the chemicals needed for hydroponic gardening, Wikipedia is my friend. I just hope all the information on there is right... As for the "missing" bits, in a full-length story I probably would have written more of the heist and also the actual scene where they were planning it. Then again, I'm currently trying to learn to do exactly this and avoid writing things in novel-length OF.

Kaynara - note I skirted round what she was actually singing...
