A/N: This is a Mal/Inara fic. I have become just a bit obsessed with that relationship as of late. This is a short little, angst-ridden piece, and I hope it does the 'ship and the 'verse justice!

Thanks to Kaynara for taking a look.

Please continue to comment as you always do!

What’s fair – 1/2

“How long?”

“Without treatment?” He waited for her nod and then said, “Six months tops. Possibly less.”

Swallowing thickly, the young woman’s brown-eyed gaze studied her hands resting lightly in her lap. She was much too young to be suffering such a diagnosis, but diseases were not discriminating. They made no accommodation for fairness.

The doctor watched his patient in silence for another moment. He could see her struggling and it pained him. He’d done a lot of good in the twenty plus years he’d practiced medicine, but he’d also been responsible for delivering news like this that had often destroyed the recipient’s life.

Setting her chart aside, Doctor Elias moved to the seat beside her and sat down. As she lifted her eyes to him, giving him a wan smile, he returned the look and said, “I think we should discuss your treatment options.”

Shaking her head, she told him firmly, “No. I won’t go through that. Not when the chances of survival are so low.”

“Miss,” he objected, his tone growing a bit forceful. “Treating this disease can increase your chance of recovery by almost fifteen percent. Don’t you think that’s worth it?”

Shaking her head again, those brown eyes were back on his face, a familiar glint of steel shining in them. “No, not when the treatments will render me basically comatose for months at a time. I will not spend the last six months of my life confined to a bed.”

“There are new treatments we could try as well. Gene therapy has been successful in other cases such as yours.”

“Doctor,” Inara intoned, her voice holding just a bit of a warning.

Raising a hand in surrender, Elias caved. “All right. If that’s what you want. N

I liked it, especially because Mal was insightful. Oh angst. That is just how I like my M/I.

I can't believe how cowardly Inara is acting. Yes, cancer is a devastating condition to discover you have but to avoid all possibility of treating and holding back the decline and also not telling those who love her like Mal, Kaylee and the rest of the crew, adds a level of unintentioned cruetly that others will bear the aftermath of for years after she has passed away. She might delude herself into thinking she is sparing them but she isn't, she is running away and worst still ensuring that the prognosis actually becomes fact. Plus, even if all she has is six months she is denying herself and those that love her the opportunity to make the most of what time is left. So sad about that, I hope Mal finds out and manages to convince her to fight to live not just accept and give up. Ali D

Oh, god. I feel like this is going to be one of those fics that end up hurting my heart. *eyes TS suspiciously*

Can't wait for the next part, even if there is going to be impending heartbreak. And I know I've said this before, but I have SUCH a crush on your Simon.

This fic IS tugging at the heart strings, but I gotta agree with AMDOBELL, its not fair for Inara to do that to the crew. I've known people I loved die with plenty of warning and others who died suddenly, and its actually easier when you know in advance.

*waits in anticipation for the next part*

how cool is it this i got to read this before everyone else? ;) okay, done gloating.

"He held her so firmly he couldn’t feel her body trembling with fear as she realized she had maybe one or two more nights of lying in his arms. And then she would once again have to learn how to be alone."

Break my heart, why dontcha? Weighing in all the whole inara issue, I have to say that I understand her choice. Don't agree necessarily, and I don't know how she manages to leave mal's arms. But I can see her not wanting him to have to watch her die. I'm honestly not sure he could survive seeing that. and from inara's perspective, this must be the ultimate torture. she's a companion--her life is about control, especially when it comes to her appearance. The thought of losing control of her own body must be horrifying for her.

Don't leave us hanging, TamSibling. ;)

Ahh, someone's dying! Oh, how I love the angst! Nicely done. I love it all. And it hardly has any of Simon and Kaylee in it! :)

This is gonna make me cry before it's over, I just know it. Blast that proud Inara. Dang it, TS! I just can't resist Mal/Inara fic, no matter how sad!

;) Thank you!

Much as I completely disagree with Inara's logic and cowardice...I can see her point. Mal's lost so many people in his life that I doubt he would remain even somewhat sane once Inara's gone; the only consolation is that the majority of them probably died quickly one way or another...while Inara could possibly slowly shrivel up and die like a rose denied water for too long:(

Definitely will end up bawling by the end...it won't be Mal/Inara angst without the tears;)

Your prose is beautiful.

I like the premise of this little piece a lot. I do think, however, if Inara were to ever change so much as to no longer be a Companion (ie: get into a relationship with Mal), that she would not be able to up and leave so easily. Maybe it needs a bit more about the internal turmoil that she would have been facing. :) Shiny story.
