Best Intentions, ch. 18

“We done here?”

Mal was testy, there was no denying that, and as Zoe watched him pace up and down Serenity’s ramp, she told him, “Well, I’m guessin’ that depends.” As he turned to regard her, she asked, “You wanna get paid for our trouble?”

With a sigh, Mal rubbed a hand across the back of his neck. “Of course, Zoe, but I also want to start back towards Sihnon.”

Zoe looked to him again, reading all the signs of his distress with an expert eye. She had known the man for a long, long time, had seen him at his lowest and possibly highest point and she had to admit, the low he’d reached over the past couple of weeks was new, even for him.

Taking a step towards him, she asked quietly, “What exactly did Inara say to you?”

A sharp snap of his eyes to her face and Zoe knew she’d hit the nail right on the head; of course it had been Inara to throw him off his game. Not that Zoe didn’t like the woman; she did, and she felt that Inara was good for Mal, the high times she’d seen in her friend were when he was courting the Companion. But that still was no excuse to put the rest of the crew in danger by having Mal distracted.

“It ain’t ‘Nara,” he told her foolishly, trying to brush her off. “Why are you always thinkin’ my foul moods gotta be ‘bout ‘Nara?”

Pursing her lips at him, she told him coolly, “’Cause o’ somethin’ Wash used to say.” When Mal turned his attention back to her, she elaborated. “If it roars like a dino and looks like one too then chances are-“

“It’s a dino,” Mal finished for her, letting out another heavy sigh. Meeting his friend’s gaze, he confided, “Somethin’ ain’t right,

Wow. Alright, I did not see that coming, and I'm a jaded sunuvabitch. Good work. Lookin' forward to next chapter.

Holy angst Batman!!! Wow, absolutely amazing. The angst is packed in there like pickles! I can't believe it's almost over, I'd definitely read more. Great work!!!

Wow. Mal getting shot. Oddly enough, you never see that in fanfics.

I think you have way too many loose ends to tie up in one chapter. Definitly do a sequel.

Oh...Zoe is so gonna kill Inara when Serenity gets back to Sihnon! And I ain't being flippant! Zoe will literally track Inara down, haul her to somewhere private and just tear Inara apart verbally before probably laying into Inara physically:(

Still...brilliant work here, TamSibling! Definitely gotta love the angst at work here:D

P.S. You better damn believe we want a sequel to this! Especially since Mal's health is at the "close to death" stage unless there's a massive turnaround ASAP;)

Inara's gonna have to face them eventully, I don't see the point her avoiding them.
Again, awesome chapter. And there better be a sequel.

I cannot understand for the life of me why Zoe didn't shoot that mealy mouthed cowardly cuss Ratan dead for shooting the Captain. And as for Inara, I could really shake her until her teeth rattle. So much for giving up her old profession to be with Mal, she can't be honest even now when the nightmares are giving her a deadly forewarning. Oh foolish, foolish woman. I don't think Zoe is going to be very happy with her conduct when she sees her next just hope our Captain makes it. Ali D

Of course, Mal has to get shot while Inara can't make real contact with him. He has got to have bullet hole scars on over 50% of his body by now.

It's taken me forever to comment but - I've been busy!

I like the additional angst added here at the end. I didn't expect Mal to get shot, and Inara does deserve to be shaken within an inch of her life - even if she thought what she was doing wouldn't be found out by any parties involved.
