A/N: All right, this will probably be the last update until after Flan, so I hope you all can hold tight. Also, this chapter wasn't beta'd, so any mistakes belong to me!

I suppose you would characterize this as fluff, although I think there's definitely an undercurrent of angst ... you be the judge!

Don't forget to leave those nice, shiny comments - they make me happy!

Best Intentions, ch. 17

***

It was still raining as Kaylee and Simon again collapsed against one another, panting and breathless. Rolling onto his back and bringing Kaylee with him, he hugged her to his chest and sighed deeply. “You okay?” he asked her for about the fifth time that night.

Rolling her eyes at him, she answered, “You know Simon, it ain’t like it’s my first time.”

He smiled at her and kissed her again. “I know, I just … worry, that’s all.”

She nodded once, and then let the silence fall between them as the rain continued to splatter against the window. Truthfully Kaylee did feel a little more achy then she generally liked, but it wasn’t a bad feeling, and she knew it would pass.

“Simon?” She called to him, hoping that he hadn’t fallen asleep yet.

“Hmm,” he answered, his mind and body happily sated and wonderfully relaxed.

“I gotta ask ya somethin’.”

The serious tone in her voice made him a little less relaxed, but swallowing down his nervousness, he said, “Okay.”

Turning so she could look into his eyes, Kaylee felt her own sting a bit as she asked, “When I – When I lost the baby, it didn’t hurt nothin’, did it?”

Swallowing thickly, Simon ran a hand through her soft hair and asked, “What do you mean?”

“Well, I can still have a baby, right?” She blinked quickly, as a few frightful tears sprang to her eyes; she was so afraid of what his answer would be.

“Yes, Kaylee,” he assured her, wrapping his arms around her. “Yes, you can. There was no permanent damage done to your system.”

Releasing a big breath, Kaylee allowed her forehead to drop to h

Oh...that ending was wonderful, TamSibling! If not for Mal's parental comforting of River concerning her own parents' behaviour towards her...then for River's actual concerns. It does strike me that it's interesting timing that the Tams would head on back to Osiris before River got back with the job crew and Serenity, since River only had a day or two with her parents before she left with Mal, Zoe and Jayne:(

And I seriously have issues with Inara's actions concerning her relationship with Mal being res non grata for a couple of months. Who says she won't have issues a day after she seemingly passes the Guild's investigation procedure? All it would take is someone being vindictive enough to tell the Guild Inara was in a relationship during their investigation and she hid all the signs. That or I get the feeling the Guild's observing Serenity because of Inara's changing status from working Companion to teacher to whatever Inara has been since Miranda being highly odd...

Another fine chapter from TS.

The Mal/River scene was beautiful, though I hope what she was saying isn't foreshadowing.

I loved the baby talk, pretty much any time a Silee baby is mentioned I'm happy.

I get the feeling the Guild won't let Inara go as easily as she thinks. So now I'm worried.

The end of this installment really is beautiful. My only concern is that River is a murderer. Granted, it's not her fault, but she wasn't protecting her family when she "went wooly" in the Maidenhead. That was flat out murder. The only thing that lifts responsibility from her is that she was programmed and had no control of her actions.

But I really want to see how the situation with Inara and the Guild/Inara and Mal works out. It could get quite ugly and if things do fall to crap for Inara I'm not sure it wouldn't color her relationship with Mal - permanantly.

Now I'm all impatient. I can't wait to see what you write next.

Loved this but oh my, I think Inara is making a big mistake lying to the Guild. There is bound to be some pretty ugly fall out when they discover the truth and it may be something that Mal has to pay the price for. It is a case of Inara wanting to have her cake and eat it without paying the baker. Not only that she is roping others into the lie like Kaylee and Simon. Not good. I did however adore the scenes between Kaylee and Simon, the reassurance that Kaylee can still have children, and of course the perfectly beautiful scene between River and Mal at the end. Ali D :~)

“You ain’t never murdered nobody. You’ve only protected them you love. That ain’t wrong, it’s right, the most right thing there is.”
~ Loved the whole Mal/River scene, and this sentiment especially

I really love Simon reassuring Kaylee that she will be able to have a baby in the future. That scene wasn't long but it was very nice.

Kaylee's converstion with Inara was nice and I really loved Eli's with Simon. I just love that OC!

River and Mal's is probably the best of them all. Nicely done!

I'm enjoying this story immensely.

The final scene with Mal and River is a thing of beauty. Sad, angsty beauty, but beauty nonetheless.
