AN: I just finished my long, arduous Life's Too Short, so now I'm gonna do a bunch of short pieces for a while unless someone asks me for a sequel. I have another long piece in mind, but... I'm kinda lazy, so... I'm digging myself into a hole, here, aren't I. Just read. PLEASE REVIEW!!!!! I'LL LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!

‘When I was just a little girl,

I asked my mother, ‘What will I be?

Will I be pretty? Will I be rich?’

Here’s what she said to me…’

Inara had not been prepared for Serenity. She could admit that now. For once in her entire, preplanned life, Inara Serra had been taken completely and utterly by surprise.

Although she was a little taken aback by the fact that ‘surprise’ wore suspenders.

She remembered first walking aboard, entering that cold, colorless shuttle. She remembered it as if it were yesterday.

Hmm. Should I rent this? Overwhelming yes, I think. I need this. Merciful Buddha, but I need this. Although… if I do… this man, this Malcolm Reynolds, is going to be trouble. I don’t think I like that mocking note in his eyes. I don’t particularly like being mocked… And look at those suspenders! Ooh… look at that smile, right there, he doesn’t want to smile, but he is… and those hands… bet they’d know their way around a woman… no. Stop. Stop right there. No relationships with the crew. Especially not with this scruffy captain with his gorgeous eyes and adorable, little-boy smile. Oh, wait, he’s talking. Oh, really? You think so? Okay, give a little pause there right after ‘because you want me’. Let him stew in that! Wait, too long of a pause, back on track. He’s going to rent me this shuttle. I can already tell. And he does want me. I can tell that, too. Not that anything’s ever going to come of it. Did he just insult me? Oh, I can tell this is going to be a fruitful and lucrative business arrangement.

Now, though, she found it hard to believe she’d been so cavalier about it all. She

By the way, that's 'shuh-WHAM-ee', not 'shawl-HAM-ee'. Don't ask. Stupid beta. :) Kidding- I love you Min!

I liked this "off the cuff" look into Inara's mind. Maybe a bit too relaxed for her speech patterns, but I am convinced Inara spent many a night in her shuttle berating herself for having feelings for that man and his suspenders.

Personally? I think this is the perfect style for Inara's mind. It's educated and perceptive, but relaxed and open. All the things that Inara is truly, when one peels away her Companion training;D

And I wanna see a sequel showing Mal's POV on this entire matter. It's only fair;)

Songfics generally aren't my thing but this one works pretty well. Your A/N at the beginning makes it sound as though you take kindly to requests so...a Mal POV would be much appreciated.

"Kissed Mal. Who really was incredibly stupid for not figuring that out."

yes, he really really is. oh i loved this to bits. loved every part of it, really. i loved her insults mingled with grudging affection. i loved the crew applauding--they really aren't subtle at all! and i love how they come together--so real and natural. you MUST write a Mal companion piece. ;)

I love how Inara keeps mentally blaming Mal for not picking up on the fact that she wants him and acting on it when she is the one who drew the line that mustn't be crossed. This was really good and yes, Kaylee will be pleased. Now we just need this from Mal's point of view to round the story off good and proper. Excellent! Ali D :~)

I liked this very much but I think the speech pattern is a bit too informal, too casual. It detracted a tad, just a tad!, from the story which was perfectly adorable. Great fluff - just what I needed after all the stuffing on Thanksgiving!

...and just because it's punny, I think you should have named this story "Que Serra".

Just a word in my defense... I was pretty much tipsy on too much Thanksgiving champagne when I wrote this, so I couldn't have Inara sounding too stuffy and put-together, now could I??? *wink wink*

nice tone created from using this song

my favorite part is how Inara's students and Mal's crew can see right thru these two, even without training or mind reading capabilities

Mal's POV please!!!!!!!! Maybe "Ring of Fire"

Wow.

I'm stunned.

Seriously, that's probably one of the best Malnara's that I've read, at least as a stand-alone piece. You've got Inara down perfectly, and now I have to go read the Mal one.

The whole thing is wonderful, but I just about died laughing at the line, "She’d just rushed down there, seen him lying there limply like a… limp person".
