A/N: Sorry for the delay in getting this chapter off ... very busy weekend spent away from a wireless connection (yes, it was tough, but I soldiered through!)

Here is the inevitable "Simon tells Kaylee about the miscarriage." I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Please, please, please keep those comments coming whether good or bad. They make me happy (and productive)!

And thanks to Leiasky once again ... I'm pretty sure you all know why by now!

Best Intentions, ch. 11

“That Doc Butler,” Kaylee said, as Simon rejoined her in the bedroom, sitting close. “He is hilarious, ain’t he?”

Smiling at her Simon said, “Yes, he’s a good man. And a great doctor.”

“He’s the one offered you a job, right?” Kaylee asked, noting the hesitant look that had fallen on Simon’s face.

Nodding once, Simon said, “Yes, he did. A fact he just reminded me of, actually.”

Smiling proudly, Kaylee leaned towards him and said, “Well, that’s ‘cause he saw how shiny I’m doin’ an’ he was impressed all over ‘gain.” Crossing the rest of the space between them, Kaylee kissed him, and Simon found himself pulling her close, his hand cradling the back of her head. He loved her so much; he knew that if he wasn’t experiencing it firsthand, he would never believe that one person could feel for another the way he felt for Kaylee.

Parting, Kaylee whispered, “Well, now who’s single-minded?”

“Sorry,” Simon murmured, his hand still on her cheek, their foreheads touching. “I’ve wanted to do that all day.”

“Don’t gotta be apologizin’, sweetie,” Kaylee said, her eyes sparkling with desire. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she moved into kiss him again as she murmured, “Not when you’re kissin’ me like that.”

Simon’s lips met hers again, but it wasn’t with the same ardor as their kiss only a moment before and Kaylee picked up on it. Pulling back from him with a quizzical expression, she ran a hand down his cheek and asked quietly, “Simon, what’s wrong?”

Smiling to her lightly, Simon to

Good to see another chapter, and the miscarriage news went as I expected it too.

I liked the River/Simon interaction, and Sheydra's assesment of Zoe making a good Companion was neat too.

Fluff away. We could all use a break from the angst from time to time.

Yay! I was getting worried there... hoping you weren't going to just leave us hanging! I admire how you handled Kaylee with this. It would be easy for her to fall apart, but your dialogue makes a good point: how do you mourn someone/something you never got to love? To be sure it's a difficult subject and trying to imagine someone in her position would make this a heartwrenching experience. But you didn't make her fall apart or go nuerotic so I'm impressed!

And the fluff is delightful! I love the scene of S/K in the bath. Really excellent!

BTW, I'm not sure how many chapters you've got on this one, but I wonder if we should be expecting more angst or if you're getting ready to wrap this one up.

Oh...you hit the "Kaylee learns of her miscarraige" scene on the head, TamSibling! Especially with Kaylee's confusion and difficulty in mourning for someone she never knew, not even in passing. Probably even worse for her since it was her son or daughter:(

Still...loved this chapter, especially the River/Simon and Silee scenes. The Inara/Sheydra scene was a humdinger too;)

Gotta say though...all of Serenity's other female crew would have made excellent Companions, for one reason or another. Though Kaylee probably would have been the poorest student, since she would have had a tough time with some of the training dealing with defence or emotional restraint. Just not in her to be pleasantly cold to people...or kick their asses without serious reason:D

ECAmber - This story has 19 chapters total, so there will be more angst. I don't know if it'll be as angsty as the earlier chapters, but we're definitely not out of the woods yet.

So glad you all liked the scene in the bathtub ... it was such fun to write!

Look for another update tonight.

I loved Kaylee's reaction to Simon telling her about the lost baby. Seemed very true to her character.

And River's conversation with Simon was nicely done too.

The bath was all manner of hot without being graphic at all. And I really love Kaylee's playfullness and wanting to torture him.
