Best Intentions, ch. 7

***

The first day of Kaylee’s disappearance, Simon and Inara packed their things and left the estate hurriedly. Inara had already arranged for an apartment for them in the city, one owned by the Guild. It was a beautiful penthouse, high up in the city’s center, but neither of them enjoyed it; they were barely there as they searched all day and night for Kaylee, returning only when their bodies dictated the need for sleep. With an almost disgusted snort they both realized, that under any other circumstances, Liliana and Edward Serra would be thrilled at the two of them sharing an opulent penthouse together.

On the second day, Simon and Inara split up. The young woman headed to House Madrassa asking her friends and fellow Companions to look for Kaylee when they were out in public, she figured the more eyes they had searching the better off they would be. Simon, fearing the worst, canvassed the area hospitals and emergency rooms. He asked to speak with Doctor Butler when he went to Sihnon Memorial and the man promised he would keep an eye out. Simon liked him.

The third day brought more of the same. This time they started with all the mechanics shops down by the port, asking if a young woman fitting Kaylee’s description had come looking for work. They were always turned away, each negative response bruising Inara and Simon’s hearts as they tried not to despair.

When they started searching the city’s hotels, it became difficult to get any information. In a place like Sihnon, discretion was more than the better part of valor, it was a way of life. Attempting to bribe or wheedle information from the front desk clerks at any of the facilities was tantamount to breaking out of an Alliance prison. Since Simon had some experience with

I had many different reactions to this chapter:

‘She sent a wave to the Serras’- Small heart attack

‘I’m sorry, son, but she lost the baby’- Heart broke (which seems to be common when I read your stories.)

‘She darted out into traffic and was hit by a speeding hovercar’- Strange relief that at least that guy didn't get her.

Sorry for the short comment, but loved this and the last chapter.

Bring in elder Tam's now, please.

Is it wrong that I'm glad Kaylee got hit by a car? I know it's not a good thing, but in a hospital under the care of Simon and a friend (or someone who at least appears to be a friend) is a much better place for her than smuggled off planet.

Now. Since Simon can frequently cure massive gunshot wounds in less than a day, I fully expect Kaylee to be running marathons within the week, right? Right.

I just hope that Dr Eli Butler doesn't wave Simon's parents. So sad about the baby, just hope Kaylee pulls through okay and that Mal and the crew can get them and get back into the Black as quickly as they can! Ali D :~)

Ya know...probably not the first person to think this, but I guess I will be the first to say it: Lilliana and Edward Serra have just booked a one-way VIP package to the depths of Hell and damation (or whatever underworld equivilent there is in Buddhism...if they are even anything resembling Buddhists). Their previous acts were heinous and worthy of serious punishment...but the onus of Kaylee's near-death incident and the loss of Simon and Kaylee's unborn child? Book's Special Hell ain't near enough disturbing for Inara's parents :<

And I don't wanna imagine what could happen with the part of the crew on Edward's "job." Don't think he's quite as malicious as his wife is, but I am not holding out much hope...

You evil, evil person, TamSibling!

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad as all get out that Kaylee wasn't caught by that guy chasing her and smuggled off world, never to be seen again, but getting hit by a moving (hover)car AND losing an unborn baby...not much of a consolation.

Something tells me Simon is gonna be one very angry fellow if he ever lays eyes on the Serra's again.

Speaking of those old and nasty people...hurt them badly, now.

Once again, your gift with the angst is killing me in the best possible way!

Love the angst. *claps hands gleefully*

I like that S/K lost what they didn't even know they had. Simon's reaction was wonderful. Telling Kaylee is going to hurt soooo much. And that final blow should be enough for him to really lose it when he sees the Serras again.

Lili and Edward definately crossed the line from not very nice to I'm so evil I have to have a bad laugh. The Chinese have a lot of hell's but i think they'd have to create a new one just for them. That's right their going to the special hell. I just want Serenity to leave Sihnon after burning downn the Serra house.

Yaaaaaaay. I mean, not "yay, horrible things are happening" but "yay, I can finally read the latest chapters!"

Angsty goodness!

I loved: Simon and Inara working together. Because. They make the best team, and I love their friendship, and they should work together more often. Even if it wasn't in the best of circumstances.

And Mal and Inara, who are so... functional and supportive. *hugs them both*

I like Simon and Inara working together, though them living in the same penthouse might give Kaylee and/or Mal a wrong impression.

More babies? *sigh*
