Post-BDM. Kaylee makes a decision that Simon cannot believe. Oh, and Lili's machinations are exposed. PG-13 for adult situations. Simon/Kaylee, Mal/Inara

Kaylee awoke to an empty bed. Frowning, she picked her head up from the pillow and looked around the darkened room. Night had fallen, the stars visible through the windows and she didn’t have any clue as to where Simon could be. A little worried, although she didn’t know why, she sat up fully and looked to her night table noticing a piece of paper there. Smiling she raised it to her eyes, flipping on the lamp so she could read his neat handwriting. I was hungry. I’ll be back with food. Love you.
Smiling even wider, Kaylee flopped onto her back and squealed, most of the pain from the day before receding as she remembered the amazing sex and honest conversation she’d had with Simon. He loved her, he’d actually said it, and even though he’d once had his choice of a bunch of rich girls, he still loved her. It was a heady feeling and a new one for Kaylee as well. She’d certainly lusted after enough boys, liked quite a few, but loved … nope, Simon was the first for that.
Sighing for a moment, Kaylee also considered the other part of their discussion, the moving off Serenity part. Simon wasn’t wrong, she would miss the ship and the crew, but would it be so bad if they settled somewhere? If they had a real life? If Simon had a real job, again saving people, reattaching folks’ limbs that lost them? While he may have felt he’d stumbled into a charmed life, Kaylee knew he’d been born to help people, heal them. And she knew that the longer he stayed on Serenity, patching up bullet holes and stab wounds, the more miserable he would become. And just as he wanted her to be ridiculously happy, she wanted the same for him. There had to be a compromise.
Making a decision, Kaylee searched
I somehow get the feeling (thank you, cryptic River) that the Buddhist may not be that safe...nor would it be great if the Parents Serra find Kaylee first.
Basically, S+K once again eat it on the communication front. Not an insurmountable problem, if Simon, you know, actually ever says anything. And Kaylee actually, you know, ever listens. Can I vote for a healthy slapping for the both of them?
And i would love to have a littel inkling of what's going on in River's mind! Can't wait to read the next chapter!
Would someone please SHAKE Kaylee and Simon and introduce them to the notion of compromise?
Like, maybe there's some project for travelling doctors, and given Simon already has a ride, he could be paid to be a doctor to people in less-known places?
Or Kaylee finds a nice junkyard to run close to a border hospital?
Or Kaylee and Simon meet every weekend when Serenity arrives after the latest job?
But, y'know, a couple can only come up with these solutions WHEN THEY HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT THEM!
This all-or-nothing decision from Kaylee ... makes no sense. She's breaking up with Simon because she can't give up her job on Serenity, but she doesn't go back to Serenity? Uh, hello? (Good plot device by the way)
Don't get me started on River.
Y'know, it'd be fun if the Family Tam got dragged into this - what better way to get the eldest son back than if his parents fought the Serra's on his behalf?
So, here's my thoughts: like those before me a little communication between Simon and Kaylee would go a long freaking way in avoiding angst (but who would like that? Really!). I'm mostly curious about Mal and where the ship is heading... and why he didn't let Inara in on it. It seems he usually gives his people a clue about what job they're going on... and to leave without a mechanic? Not thinking clearly on that one (and if something happens to Serenity? Who is there to fix it? Not no one).
I do like seeing Kaylee find her way to a Buddhist monastary/temple. It does clash a bit with the harbinger of danger for her (aside of Tibet, "danger" and "Buddhism" doesn't really go together in the Western world).
Anyway, I'm digging the slow build and looking forward to the next installment!

Mal...could you be more gullible? It's obvious that Inara's parents don't have the slightest tad bit of respect or liking towards you, and you know this, so you leave Inara and go on a job? Idiot.
Inara, you know your parents are not on the level, but your gonna be ignorant to it and let your father send Mal away on a job? And at a time when you'll need him most? Nice move sweetheart, just genius.
Simon and Kaylee...never thought I'd say this, but the way they are acting, they really should not be together. Seriously, learn the value of a good discussion, it may not solve many issues, but at least you become aware of them. Simon's never been much of a talker, and he needs to learn how to ciommunicate. Kaylee's a real big talker, so her zipped lips on her problems are being far more detrimental than anyone realises. And both need to grow a new pair of ears.
Kaylee especially needs a kick up the bum. Running away...yeah, because that's got a great record at solving problems.
The only way she can overcome the obstacles in her path is to man up (so to speak and face them, not take the cowards way out and run off. Kaylee's never been weak, but now she's just being a Big Damn Fool.
Rant over.
I really am loving this though! There's so much angsty potential here, and something tells me you'll be wringing it for all it's worth, which is only a good thing, because I loves me some angstyness !

I agree, S&K need to COMMUNICATE!
I can see Inara wanting, somewhere deep down, to be able to trust that her parents aren't controlling, meddlesome jerks.
Hopefully Kaylee will find what she needs at the temple, realize she was wrong, and go back to Simon. I think she just needed some space, to go somewhere that was unfamiliar and simply think about the future.
And I am so thankful Inara smacked the bitch up! How in the name of Hell did Inara spring from Lilliana Serra's loins? The woman honestly is seemingly worse than Simon's parents, and they seemed to be stick-up-pigu types just from two scenes in "Safe"! Mal's gotta be thanking the Guild right now, cuz who else gave Inara some sampling of humility before her time aboard Serenity?
