A/N: I'm trying to pace myself and post every other day. I hope I can hold out!
Thanks to all for the great comments. Whether you think Kaylee acted correctly or not, I hope you can sympathize with the unenviable position she's in. And keep those comments coming - they keep my honest!
And thanks again to Leiasky - she is currently working her tail off to do all of us Browncoats attending Flan a HUGE favor and she's still finding time to read my stuff ... AMAZING!

Best Intentions, ch. 5
***
Mal found Inara around midday, in a corner of her family’s property, surrounded by more roses. Frowning slightly as he watched her prune the bushes meticulously, he moved up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
She gasped a bit at the sudden contact and then relaxed against him, saying, “You know how you’re always telling me not to sneak up on you when you’re cleaning your guns?” she asked, tilting her head to the side a bit so Mal could place a kiss to her neck.
“Yeah,” he said quietly, moving his lips up to her jaw.
“Well, the same thing goes for surprising someone holding pruning shears,” Inara admonished him, turning in his embrace and brandishing the deadly looking clippers.
“Whoa, easy there, darlin’. Those things look like they could snip more than them flowers.” He teased her easily, glad to see that despite the revelations of the previous night she was smiling. Her eyes even held a bit of their old sparkle, and Mal felt a weight lift off his shoulders he hadn’t even been cognizant of.
Laughing at his joke, Inara turned back to her work, the sound of the scissors snapping through the thick stems the only noise for a few moments as Mal again watched her. Out here, surrounded by beautiful things, Inara only looked more precious. She was finer than any of these flowers, more colorful and delicate than they could ever hope to be. Mal wondered for a moment if the petals ever got jealous, knowing that there was a beauty in the world they could n
So glad Lili's plan backfired. I truly despise that woman. You have a talent for creating OC's that I just really hate! LOL! Well done:)
But he handled it well, though it seems it might be better for him to keep his lists in his head in the future.
I still expect him to lay the smackdown on Lili at some point, once Kaylee owns up to what happened. Looks like Inara is getting to that point, too.
I also despise omnipotent meddling, and that's what River just did; I'm psychic and I can see the future so I get to do whatever I want to for reason x y or z. She had no right to add Simon's journal to his luggage, and Kaylee should have kept her nose out of Simon's journal. How is he supposed to respect either woman if neither will respect his privacy?
So, I agree the scene with simon and kaylee was very well written, and In enjoying the focus on Mal and Inara in this one, but that just realled spoiled things for me, it seemed very out of character, especially after the atmosphere you had set up the preceding night.... I feel like there was a scene missing....
Sorry if I seem harsh today...i guess it really threw me.
And I pictured Pretty Woman too, it would be cool if that could happen.
They are just the most horible people ever, and to make Kaylee such a victim really grinds my gears...She's (even to them) obviously such a sweet, innocent person, especially in this pathetically blue blooded world, that to take advantage of that is so...ARGH! I just hate them. That is, I suppose, a credit to your skill as a writer, to write two such detestable people so well...I hope they get a big fat force-fed taste of their own medicine.
And I REALLY liked the scene between Simon and Kaylee, it was so well done, with Simon trying so hard to not step over his own words, and still being so heartfelt and honest. And I totally agree with 'tkid', Kaylee should know better than to try and hide what happened during the day from Simon, and then take it out on him for something she didn't even fully understand...silly girl.
All in all, great work!
With a smug feeling of satisfaction, Lili realized that Simon was almost going to do her work for her, just by
being himself.
~ Ok, someone is going to the special hell for this one.
Very good dialogue between Simon and Kaylee about love, and very very very GUH-worthy hot sex scene afterwards.
Father, who could you possibly know that would need Mal for a job?”
Looking offended, Mal turned to her with his best hurt expression and asked, “Hey?”
~ BWAHAHAHA !!!
“We’ll need to make sure your father isn’t going to get him into trouble.”
“Oh, Mal can do that all on his own,”
~ I like it, very funny.
Really thought Kaylee was gonna lie to Simon and get him to break up with her because of her misguided belief that Simon doesn't deserve her and would be better off back on a Core planet, being a trauma surgeon. Definitely glad Simon managed to tamp down his completely understandable anger and indignation at the fei hua Kaylee was flinging at him to show here that he loved her for her...grease spots and all:D
And I am getting the feeling that both Mal and Kaylee are well on their way to having moments of providing comeuppnace to the Serras and their posse of snobs. Kaylee definitely deserves a one on one with Lilliana about how she just pities her in that she's stuck being a glorified housewife bound by numerous rules and codes of behaviour to a man she never chose actively to marry while Kaylee has a man who loves her without fail and who would give up his entire future to make Kaylee happy. That or Kaylee saves the day with her near-mystical ability to fix machinery:D
