Best Intentions, ch. 4

***

Kaylee awoke slowly the next morning, feeling the softness of the mattress beneath her naked body and wondering for the briefest of moments where exactly she was. Blinking her eyes open, she rolled onto her side and into Simon’s arms as he slept and realized she didn’t rightly care where, as long as she was with him.

A few hours later, she was again awake and this time she was alone. Sitting up slowly and wiping the sleep from her eyes, Kaylee turned her head towards the room’s wall of windows and watched the sunlight stream in through the floor to ceiling panes of glass, the warm patches of yellow light pooling onto the floor.

Listening, she heard the sounds of the shower and was about to join Simon when abruptly the water stopped running and a few minutes later he stepped back into the bedroom, rubbing a towel over his hair, another one wrapped around his waist.

Grinning wickedly at the sight of his bare and still damp chest, Kaylee rose onto her knees and crawled to the edge of the bed, her bare body now completely visible and waited for Simon to remove the towel from his face so he could see her. When he did, she giggled slightly as his eyes widened and then narrowed, filling with desire.

Without a word, he walked towards her and kissed her good morning, his body still warm to the touch from the hot water that had washed it clean. The humid feeling warmed Kaylee as well, inside and out. As she deepened their kiss, Kaylee trailed one hand down his chest and tugged gently on the towel at his waist, smiling when it fell to the floor and she could feel Simon’s length pressing into her thigh.

But before they could have anymore fun, Simon broke the contact, p

Aw, poor Kaylee. I feel so awful for her. Not to nitpick, but she seems a little immature and child-like at moments. Yes, she's sweet and kind, and her feelings can easily be hurt, but she's not weak. She knows how to put people in their places and she's never one to feel sorry for herself. Realistically, I think Kaylee would have marched out of that dressing room, cursed those wretched women in Mandarin, and left the store with her head held high!

I think this is an instance where Kaylee feels completely out of her element. I agree with you that she's not weak and does not often feel sorry for herself. However, these women are preying on her most vulnerable point - the fact that she and Simon are from two different worlds and that she may, very literally, not fit into it.

Kaylee is in love with Simon - the honest-to-goodness, head-over-heels kind and while she knows that he loves her, she's also painfully aware that he could go back to the core and have his old life back. And as much as she wouldn't want him to go, she also doesn't want to be the reason he stays somewhere he isn't happy.

Thanks for the feedback EmpireX - apparently my characterization of Kaylee is not always right on, so I really appreciate it when folks point out what they feel may be off about her. I hope you keep reading!

What stuck up snobbish rats Inara's parents are and where in the wide 'verse are Mal and Inara? Ali D

I love this chapter and how you split the two apart with Edward buttering up Simon and Lili humiliating Kaylee. Can't wait to read the inevitable smack-down between Lili and Inara after Inara finds out about this.

Again, I have to wonder what's wrong with Simon. I'm sure he knows exactly what Lili and Eddie are up to, and he continues to play along with it (to a point, anyway). He doesn't need to impress these people - even if he wanted to go back to the Core, he's apparently (happily?) resigned himself to not doing so for Kaylee's sake - so why's he still being polite? There have been several comments already that are harsh enough for him (and Inara, who also knows what's going on) to speak up and let somebody have it.

When Simon was being mercilessly taunted by Jayne and Mal, Kaylee always jumped in and told them to knock it off when he couldn't defend himself. Time for the good doctor to lose a bit of the manners and do the same for her.

The last story I was all over Kaylee for not supporting her man, and this time I'm after Simon for falling down on the job. I'm an equal opportunity bastard.

What *is* Inara doing? If she's not trying to protect Kaylee and Simon fro her parents, hopefully she and Mal are plotting away. A bit of Mal's brand of mayhem at this party could fix everything.

I'm torn between who I want to tear Lili Serra limb from limb first. As all our BDH's have a good reason. . .

I shouldn't be dropping hints, but ...

Let's just say it won't be long before Lili gets a bit of a wake-up call ...

I'm, uh, going to swim against the current here and hope Edward gets his evil way with Simon.

Lemme explain ...

Simon and Kaylee just don't seem to be compatible to me, beyond the loving each other thing they've got going. Kaylee belongs in the black, on Serenity, and Simon belongs in a hospital. While Kaylee seems to understand this, she can't get Simon to talk about it, or discuss options - Kaylee gets a job as a mechanic, or runs her own shop while Simon does rounds as a surgeon type of options.

It doesn't have to be on a Core world - I think Simon would be happy in any hospital - but he won't/isn't discussing the matter, so he and Kaylee may as well split. At least this way he'd be making a definite contribution as a surgeon, and she could snag someone willing to stand up for her rights on her behalf.

Lili, on the other hand, has no hope in heck of splitting Mal and Inara up. Mal and Inara seem to have a solid, mature relationship going on, and are willing to discuss their issues and situations and come up with compromises, etc etc. And both are perfectly capable of unleashing all kinds of trouble on the other's behalf. God help the Serras when they start in on Mal.

I would, however, dearly love to see Kaylee wreck spectacular havok at the upcoming Birthday Ball.

I'm not always a huge S/K fan, but I really enjoyed this chapter. Simon getting all happy in the hospital was entirely too cute. And Kaylee.... awwwwww. Poor thing. I think she is capable of standing up for herself, but she is completely out of her element, and no matter how old you are, group opinion is *always* hard to contend with. I just want to hug her.
Monday, 06 November 2006 03:11
And by Simon's hospital induced cuteness, I meant his near fangirl squee at seeing all the new technology. Yeah. Just thought I'd make that clear. *G*

That's it, I want Liliana Serra to get hit but a runaway bus...or runaway hoverbus, whatever, just make her get hit by something. Then, all her relatives (barring Inara of course) either spontaniously explode or combust (it's a toss up).

Basically, with the notable exception of Inara, I hate the Serra clan.

And I simply cannot wait for them to get a piece of their own..revenge is a dish best served. Period.

Okay, I feel totally upset for Kaylee!! I would cry in my dressing room if I heard comments like that about myself! I hope the next chapter has Kaylee getting them back, with out malice, but just by her good nature making them feel awful! And I thought it was very cute how Simon was so impressed by all the equipment at the hospital. Let's hope Inara's father's machinations put the idea of him staying on Sihnon in Simon's head! Can't wait for the next chapter!

> Let's hope Inara's father's machinations put the idea of him staying on Sihnon in Simon's head!<
I meant let's hope Inara's father's machinations DON'T the idea of him staying on Sihnon in Simon's head...I am the Queen of Typos!

please continue poor Kaylee

I love Kaylee, I would take a bullet for her, but she needs to realise a few things.
1. She should stop talking, just nod or shake her head if someone talks to her.
2. People from the Core are not nice and need a good kick in the ass (with a few exeptions).
3. That she is awesome and no-one should make her feel otherwise.
4. That Simon loves her.

After reading these comments...one can conclude that you have done a steller job on writing the issues these couples would face post Miranda.

I ship both couples but I always thought M/I's relationship (the way Joss wrote it) was based on love, while S/K was more about sex. Do you need either or both for a lasting relationship? who knows??

How did a young man like yourself, an accomplished surgeon, end up on a ship like Serenity? Under the command of a
captain like Malcolm Reynolds?
~ Even though he is only trying to break apart the couples to put Simon with Inara, he is unwittingly going into areas that can get Simon (and River) into much more trouble
EDIT: After reading further, it seems that may not be the case.

The part at the end wherein Kaylee is the butt of all of their jokes and rude comments is a bit sad, and though I know that she will get even in the end, I also know it will get worse before it gets better.

Damn...this was a beautiful chapter, if only in how perfectly angsty and malevolent all the character moments are. However, that doesn't stop me from being nitpicky;D

To me, Kaylee came off as a tad too bumpkinish...almost like the more Mrs. Serra and her clan of harpies threw at Kaylee, the more she automatically reverted to a default setting of "Hee Haw." That and like EmpireX said, she's a tad too much like a punching bag emotionally here. Much easier personally to accept Kaylee just taking all this evil mojo quietly and suffering it than her seeming completely without intelligence.

Now...I am not asking Kaylee to suddenly attempt refined speech (though it would be a briliant ploy for her to pull off a brilliant con during the ball of her being refined out the wazoo then have a climatic moment of showing she's not what she seemed), but I just can't recall Kaylee sounding completely hickish during the series. Jayne, on the other hand....;)
