A/N: River finally gives birth! You have all been clamoring so I hope it lives up to the wait.

Also, I have to give credit to the writers of "Mad About You," who I think wrote the best labor/delivery scene ever between Paul and Jamie. A lot of my scene with River's labor was inspired by that.

Thanks to Leiasky for the beta!

14 Months After Jayne’s Death – The Present

***

Mal entered his and Inara’s room as quietly as he could, having already slipped out of his clunky combat boots on the way up the stairs. He and Zoe had been out with Willis, discussing the finer points of a more lucrative job they had in the works, and he guessed Inara might be just a bit perturbed by the lateness of the hour.

As he eased the door shut and padded across the room to divest himself of his clothes, he heard her quiet voice. “Don’t come sneaking in here like you’ve got something to hide, Malcolm Reynolds.”

Smiling tightly at her tone, as Mal recognized it for the tease it was, he pulled his suspenders down off his shoulders and slipped out of his trousers as he said, “Well, now, darlin’, you know my life’s an open book.”

Rolling over, she eyed him critically and by the time he’d made his way to the bed and under the covers with her, she was smiling widely. “You know,” she told him, pressing a few ardent kisses to his lips and neck. “A lesser woman would be very jealous.”

“A lesser woman wouldn’t be my wife,” Mal answered back, his voice dropping an octave as Inara’s touch enlivened him.

Chuckling against his mouth, she murmured, “Very true.” She kissed him a bit more, their tongues meeting and increasing the passion play as he ran his hands up the silk of her nightgown and into her hair, her hands caressing his chest and face.

Parting for air, Mal was more than ready to kiss her again, when Inara raised a hand to stop him. Confused, he pouted a bit and asked, “What, ain’t I gettin’ lucky?”

Throwing him a sultry look that sen

A new Frye-Tam baby? Squee!

Although I can't help but wonder what Daniel and Rylee will have to say about that. *g*

“Yeah, as long as she doesn’t look like Uncle Jayne. Right, Daddy?”
LOL

I like the new Frye-Tam baby idea, it's always cute.

Good story but....

Am I the only one who finds it a little squicky that Simon delivered River's baby? :-) That one's been bugging me for awhile..... back to the time she was pregnant before and had the miscarriage.

Yikes. :-) Love Simon so much but......

Awkward. ;-0

I have to agree with Tresta: The first thought I had when I read the author's note was that Simon delivering River's baby would be a bit odd in my mind.

“A lesser woman wouldn’t be my wife,” Mal answered back, his voice dropping an octave as Inara’s touch enlivened him.
~ Ah, Mal. Always ready with a flattering comment at just the right time. He has learned well.

“No, mama,” Cadie said quietly, crawling up onto the bed. Sitting on her knees, she placed a light hand to River’s face and said, “It’s you.”
~ Cadie still remains one of my favorite characters through these stories, and I am glad for River's sake that she is there.

With a sigh, River rubbed her stomach and murmured, “Oh, sure, make me wait.”
~ I like the sarcasm, a very good sign, especially during a very trying time like the birth of a child

All the false labor pains are a real nuisance, I know that one from personal experience, though my wife never bothered to go in to see her doctor/midwife for them.

“I know,” Simon said his expression immediately sobering. “I just can’t help thinking this is all so perfectly Jayne.” As both women turned startled expressions to him, he added, “Slow, stubborn and a bit painful.”
~ BWAHAHAHAHA !!!!

I LOVE that River had such a hard time with the baby. This was just the perfect response for Simon here. . .

“I just can’t help thinking this is all so perfectly Jayne.” As both women turned startled expressions to him, he added, “Slow, stubborn and a bit painful.”

And River's annoyance with Simon with each false labor was just perfect.

I wasn't squicked at all with Simon delivering his sister's baby. He's a doctor. A professional. He can get over that it's his sister whose baby he's delivering. Especially after all they've been through.

I just hope they have enough gorram diapers! Loved Cadie being almost a mama to River when she was in pain. And Inara and Mal - just lovely moments. Ali D :~)
You can't take the sky from me

Gotta agree with Leiasky...by this point in the overarching storyline (Pilot episode of the series to this point), I think Simon's dealt with his mental hang-up with treating his sister for various ailments and injuries. Probably ain't a fan of having to be specialist when it comes to obstetrics or gynecology...but Simon's a professional;)

Definitely loved River's sarcasm and threats cuz she would deploy the Tam dry wit and her government-made ass kicker training to make her point about wanting her child born ASAP:D

Really hope you can have Cadie help her mom finally start the last stage of transition to being able to go about life without relying on vivid dreams of her trained-ape hubby:(

ANOTHER ONE!!!??? Jesus aged christ! Too many kids!

Though... I have to wonder what the second generation would be like... You could write more of this story after all :) What do ya' say? You could do it!

Let's see, how many are there? Mimi, Sophie, Daniel, Rylee, the new twins, Cadie, Maddy, um... too many for me to remiember all at once. But you have an all-star line up to use and the first generation as cameos! That would be awesome!

Okay... getting too excited......... Loved this one as I did the others. Want more (... but you can probably see that...)
