A NEW DAY, epilogue: Miracles
***
“River?”
Looking up from where she was again tending Jayne’s grave, River saw her mother’s concerned face. As the older woman walked towards her, a bit unsteadily over the uneven ground, River rose, brushing off her dirty hands and allowing her mother to wrap her in a tight embrace.
“Oh, sweetheart, I am so sorry,” she whispered into her hair, as she held the girl tight.
Blinking back a few tears as her mother’s emotions overwhelmed her, River patted her back and said, “It’s okay, mother. I’m okay.”
Pulling back from her, Regan gave her daughter a quizzical look and asked, “Really? Are you sure?”
Nodding once, River looked over her shoulder at the headstone and then back to her mother. “Yes, I’m sure. Because I was loved once and that’s what’s important.”
Wiping away a few of her own tears, Regan said wistfully, “Well, he was a good man.”
Frowning at her, River said wryly, “No, he wasn’t. And if you could have picked any other husband in the ‘verse for me, you would have.”
Smiling at her intuitiveness, Regan squeezed River to her side, and said, “Okay, you got me. Maybe I didn’t think he was right for you, at first. But he did love you, my dear, and that made him very important to me.”
River leaned her head against her mother’s shoulder and they stood in silence for a moment. Finally, Regan pressed a kiss into her hair and said, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t be here sooner. We pushed the transport as fast as we could.”
Nodding, River told her, “I know.”
“Actually,” Regan said quietly, reaching a hand into one of her deep pockets. “I have something for you. I honestly have no idea where it came from, it just showed up at the house th
I honestly don't care where that cure or ship came from. Problem solved, that's all that matters to me.
“No, he wasn’t. And if you could have picked any other husband in the ‘verse for me, you would have.”
LMAO
I'm so proud that you were strong enough not to give us another gut wrenching tearjerking ending. I think you've grown:) I'm just kidding!
I'm glad River finally had her baby. She's been through enough. Jayne should be around to see her though (grumble)
So when's the NEXT sequel? :)
Happy about the baby, but wish Jayne was there to see her.
Well, FIANLLY, some happiness for our lil Albatross. 'Bout gorram time.
Just please tell me you aren't going to rip all our hearts out and dance a jig on them in the coda...please?
And oh, am I ever looking forward to seeing what this mixture of River and Jayne grows up to be like.
You can't take the sky from me
That being said, I do wish you gave a bit more detail on her pregnancy and delivery. I'm rather curious how River and family handled it. Especially when she got all big and new the baby was ok. The opposite of angst: all heartwarming and stuff.
I am looking forward to more of the afterstory to see where you take all of the characters, BDHs and OCs as well.
Definitely wanted to see more River/Regan interaction before the DEM came along, but what was expressed really summed up the nature of their feelings about Jayne;)
Kinda fence-sitting about the antidote, to be honest. It's great River got it...but it is a Deus Ex Machina moment. River gets to have a kid safely, nobody else gets directly harmed in a dangerous search for answers and Simon doesn't get to have to deal with emotionally-needy women in his life. But other than Jayne being gone, it's a tad too cut and dried....
Still...I get the feeling that A New Reason will bring some healthy fun to the mix once again;)
BEB
Bring on the fluffy fun!
Whew... Damn... Im beat from the emotional gamit.
