A/N: This is the last chapter of the story, however, there is the epilogue (which is very short) and then a five-part postscript called A NEW REASON. I also have a one-off written with some of these same characters that takes place about twelve years after the fact.
And, just to put everyone's mind at rest, your questions WILL be answered ... trust me.
Thanks to Leiasky for everything!

A NEW DAY, ch. 33: Look to the Rainbow
***
Simon still could not sleep. Even though he did feel better after having let out his emotions, his heart was heavy and his mind tired as he tried to come to terms with all that had happened.
With a sigh, he rolled out of bed, careful not to wake Kaylee, and pulling on a t-shirt, padded down the hall to Daniel’s room. He was getting better, slowly, although his ears were still bothering him more than Simon liked. Entering his room, he sat gingerly on the edge of his son’s bed, looking down into his peaceful face, flushed from sleep.
Jayne’s death had also rekindled something in Simon, something he hadn’t expected – regret. Regret that he had not been able to spend every minute of his son’s life with him. Those first few months, they were precious, just as every minute was, and Simon’s guilt over not being there for the birth, over not being there for Kaylee had resurfaced with a vengeance in the past few days.
He had tried to dismiss it, as he had tried every day for the past five years. There was nothing he could do to get that time back, no magic spell, no wish that would give him back those two months or the nine that Kaylee had been pregnant. But he still wanted them, stubbornly. Was still mad he couldn’t have them.
With another heavy sigh, Simon leaned down to kiss his son goodnight, knowing he should at least try to sleep. Rising, he was almost out the door, when Daniel’s voice called to him. “Dad?”
Turning back to him, Simon sat beside him again and whispered, “I’m sorry, buddy. I didn’t mean to wake you up.” He br
Just give me ten or twelve epilogues and I'll be happy. :)
I've said it before and I'll say it again. You're fucking briliant! You kept me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter and I can't thank you enough for the ride. It's been amazing.
I'm not the best at intelectualizing stories and such, but I know gold, or should I say platinum when I see it.
I can't wait for the rest. This is one of the best series' I've ever read and I do a lot of this kind of reading so I want you to know that I don't say that lightly.
Thank you.
Well done!!!
I think all the crew needs counselling. They have some serious guilt and survival issues, they seem to think that they have the power to control the world. They'll either eventually have a collective nervous breakdown if things contiue sucking for them, or they'll all die young from stress, anxiety, and ulcers.
Had a thought about River's pregnancy that has been brewing ever since the virus thing was introduced. It seems possible that 500 years in the future they should be able to transfer a developing embryo or even a more advanced foetus between women, thus solving the whole virus problem.
Looking forward to the coda to see if they all live happily ever after. And, the more pressing question, do Kaylee and Simon stick to their 4 kids? Cause you know, I totally see an "Oops" in their future. :-D
Oh - typos. When Inara's thinking about her slefishness, you have that it "caused River her husband", which should of course be cost. Some more comma problems than usual, sticking them where they shouldn't be, but not much beyond that.
1) This really is one of the best series I have ever read here (and I'm hard pressed to think of contenders).
2) I'm really glad there's an epilogue because I really want to see this go further.
3) It really does seem odd to be reading the last chapter of this epic. I still remember (fondly) reading the first chapter and wondering where the hell Simon was and why Kaylee was so distraught.
4) I'm still pissed about Jayne. Rayne is my favorite and Jayne is the best character of the bunch imo.
5) where's the next installment again?
6) what the hell am I gonna do now that this is over?
You can't take the sky from me
Looking forwrd to the epilogue and the followups.
Definitely can't wait to read the epilogue and coda for this. Cuz there needs to be baby-saving and BDH growth and children maturation. Plus more character introspection;)
BEB
Mal and Inara talking about the baby and her middle name being Jane was funny. Also, I really didn't see Inara's guilt over Jayne's death coming, though it does make a lot of sense.
Sophia Jane. . . I actually like the name! No boys for Mal? Hah. All girls will make him lose his fragile little mind even quicker. . . LOL!
