“They’ve gotten so big,” River breathed as she looked down into Emma’s face.

Kaylee smiled, so happy to see River bonding with her newest niece. “Yeah, well, they tend to do that,” Kaylee commented easily. She was also thrilled to have River and Jayne nearby. It warmed her heart to know that their family might still have a chance of mending, and Kaylee viewed this visit as their first step towards things maybe getting back to normal.

“River!”

Or maybe not.

The sound of Simon’s angry voice startled both women, and caused Emma to start fussing in River’s arms. Trying to hush the child, River stood and rocked her a bit, pacing up and down the length of the living room, as Simon entered from the back of the house, his eyes ablaze.

Meeting his angry gaze, River swallowed hard, guessing that somehow he knew and as Jayne rounded the corner behind him, his eyes darting to Simon and then to her, she knew that she had her husband to thank for her brother’s current mood.

Placing Emma down in a bassinet by Kaylee, River faced her brother’s gaze unflinchingly. His chest heaving with anger, he stepped close to her and dropped his voice, keeping it low so as not to upset the twins. “Tell me my family is safe,” he bit out. Kaylee let out an audible gasp at the question, her eyes widening in fear at what exactly Simon could mean, the mistrust for River that she was trying to move past beating in her chest.

Nodding once, River’s eyes immediately filled with tears as she realized the type of distress she had unwittingly caused her brother. “Yes, Simon, you’re all safe. We weren’t followed, I swear.”

“You’re sure?” Simon asked her, his tone still full of anger at what he perceived to be her carelessness.

Unable to speak, River could only nod. She watched as his gaze lost some of its fire, as Simon’s chest began to rise and lower as his breathing returned to normal. Dropp

Wowza! Powerhouse chapter! I love it that Simon and River had their little talk away from the world, just brother, sister and nothing else. Made the scene that much more special.

I do, however, sense a whole lotta bad coming off the last few lines concerning Rivers injury...

I love it! I demand more!

You made me cry, but in a good way. So very happy that River and Simon have made up, it was so hard at one point to see how they would get past this but they did. Now please, let's have some happy news! Ali D :~)

I like that River and Simon made up, but it seems that all is well in the 'verse, the only exceptions being some physical wounds people need to heal and the impending pregnancy of Inara, which could cause some sort of issue. Otherwise, I don't see where you are going to pull angst/BDH death out of, which I like, because if it was predictable it wouldn't be as much fun to read.

I loved that Simon and River got away from everyone and had their talk in private. It was a perfect setting for that long-awaited moment.

I honestly wish there was a unbiased third party avaiable to help deal with this situation...cuz it's getting uglier than sin right about now. Simon is pushing things to a level leagues above where it should be, simply through his sudden desire to take advantage of his martyrdom complex and abuse it to make others feel guilty for all the sacrifices he has made over the years. Especially now, when River and Jayne have avoided seeing their family for ages, and have done everything in their power to avoid getting fingered by the Alliance. River admittedly has made some choices that were probably quite poor...but Simon just seems to think it's all about him and his life. Never once has Simon seemed to have given thought to the fact that River and Jayne can't give Simon and Kaylee what Simon and Kaylee gave River and Jayne: nieces and nephews. It's like River's forced infertility is just something that is saddening but essentially unimportant in his mind. Cuz we all know what would have happened if Kaylee had been the one to be made unable to carry a child to full term: everyone and their neighbour would have saddled up and laid down some whoopass, no hesitation and questions required. It's almost like they don't want River procreating...

Still...you do unbelieably amazing work, TamSibling. The quality of angst and pain and anger and sadness and crushed hope and...all the tiny emotions that play in these scenarios was so extensive, I actually wanted to referee the Simon/Jayne clinic cage match:D

Ok...third charm...

Brilliant work....glad Tams reconciled...didn't think River needed to admit guilt to Rylee's kidnapping but it's her prerogative...probably will be a good thing when the shit hits the fan again.

Definitely loved how you have been using Simon and River Mk. II (aka Daniel and Rylee) as a Greek chorus in the recent chapters. Especially since it validates the old chestnut about truth from mouth of babes;D
