Just a little something I had sitting around to post while I work on a much longer, multi-chapter story.

26.Corset

Kaylee’s face turned white as Inara stood behind her and laced up the pretty little death trap. “’Nara,” the mechanic gasped, trying to catch her breath. “How – does one – breathe in these – things?” Kaylee flattened her hands on her stomach, which was now so firm she was certain a bullet would bounce off it, and groaned.

“They take a bit of time to get used to, sweetie, but they give you great posture and –“

“I’m gonna faint ‘fore I even make it down the stairs.”

Inara chuckled delicately as Kaylee stared at her incredibly small waist in the mirror.

“How’m I supposed to eat anything in this?” Kaylee tried to take a deep breath but it hitched in her throat. “Simon’s gonna think I’m sick or somethin’.”

“You’ll be fine, mei mei.” Inara helped her into the deep green silk dress and then stepped back to survey her handiwork. “You’re so beautiful. Simon won’t know what say when he sees you.”

Kaylee paled even further. “Oh, ‘Nara. he don’t need no help in not knowin’ what to say.”

“Oh, sweetie,” Inara rubbed Kaylee’s silk-clad shoulders. “This is the kind of speechlessness you want out of that man.”

Kaylee smoothed the fancy emerald fabric. “This what they wear in the Core at them fancy parties?”

“This style of dress is considered to be very elegant, yes.”

“Good thing Simon’s a doc, I’m gonna need mouth to mouth by the end of the night.” Kaylee tried to take another deep breath and failed. “An’ I don’t need to pretend to be dyin’ no more to get him to give me that!”

Inara’s eyes twinkled. “Well, you have something to look forward to at the end of the night then.”

Kaylee tried to laugh but groaned as he

Haha that was delightful!

Great characterization, btw. And the corset was an interesting touch, too. It hadn't even occurred to me when I thought of Kaylee out of place in something that Inara would wear.

And show of hands; Who else finds it hilarious, and yet extremely disturbing, whenever River has commentary on Kaylee and Simon's sex life?

I love this little snippet - it gives great detail into Simon in just a few sentences, as well as Kaylee, illustrating their insecurities and the fact that they are both aware they do not fit into each other's worlds.

I'd like another show of hands as to who would like a sequel - I'd like to know just how adept Simon is at removing that corset ... any takers?

This was a very sweet story! I loved the interaction between Inara and Kaylee, they have one of my favorite relationships on the ship. River's insights are always hilarious and heartfelt in all your stories ( I think her preoccupation with her brother's sex life is a pre cursor to her own starting up . And I loved the line-
“They won’t even make it to dinner.”

Those crazy kids....Maybe they could have a second date where they actually get to eat....

he he he! this made me giggle. awesome! love the end bit with river and inara. also thought: “Oh, ‘Nara. he don’t need no help in not knowin’ what to say.” was hi-larious. so true!

the characters were scrumciouly perfect, especially kaylee. s'cool that all she's worried about is food!

I have to give Simon credit for a lot of mental stability. I'm pretty sure if my sister knew that much about me and my sex life I'd go way over the edge. And I don't even have a sister.

It's a good thing they won't make it until dinner. It'd be no fair to go for a nice meal (which, given Simon's status and the general cash flow on the ship, can't be too often) and not get to eat any of it. Besides, if Simon consents to let her lose the corset and buy a strawberry dessert, I'm sure it'd be worth his while. ;)

You never disapoint. I liked the revelation that Simon is still scared of saying something stupid. Reminds me of...
