A NEW DAY, ch. 14: Not Too Late

***

Later that night as Kaylee lay still, her eyes swollen from tears, her body spent from her emotion, Daniel entered the room. Sneaking around to the side of her bed, he crawled up and onto it, lying down so he could face her lifeless gaze.

“Mama,” he asked softly, reaching out and placing his small hand on her arm.

When she didn’t acknowledge him, he edged closer to her and kissed her cheek lightly. “I love you,” he whispered and then stayed as close to her as he could get, falling asleep beside her.

Once his breathing had evened out, Kaylee allowed a few tears to fall from her eyes and looked down at his peaceful face – her little Simon. The grief and anger she felt towards her husband had not diminished in the few hours since he’d told her what he’d seen, but the sight of her son softened her heart. Kaylee did not understand; she did not understand how a man like Simon, whom she knew loved her with everything he was, could come from a family that knew absolutely nothing of love. How he could have been raised by people that only thought to seek and destroy.

It angered her again and while she had tried to stave off her rage, had tried so hard to make her heart and her mind numb to any feeling, looking down at Daniel’s face only reminded her of all she had once lost, regained and possibly lost again.

Once, a long while ago, he had been the only reminder to her of his father and Kaylee had held onto him with everything she’d had. Now, he was the only reminder of her life before all this madness had happened and with renewed sorrow, she pulled him tight to her and kissed his hair, holding onto him again with all her might.

Good chapter, emotional, suspense-y and funny.
“We are not going to have sex in my brother’s room.”

Oh...while am glad Simon and Kaylee patched things up, did you have to cut things off right when they were getting good?!? Wait...stupid question, I know;)

Still...gotta give you major props for this chapter, as it helps deal with some big issues that were sitting like dead weight on the protagonists. Though I loved how you had Jayne think about having sex in Simon's old bed. Personally? I would be more creeped out than inclined to mess with my brother-in-law's head;D

Not having sex in her brother's bed. Ahh, have to love River there. Hee!

I thibnk Mal finding Simon was the right person. They haveb't ever been close but he was the right one to at least attempt to talk to him.

I'm glad Kaylee finally came to her senses and apologized to Simon. It was so sad and emotional. Just nice and angsty!

Now, for the big damn rescue. . .

What a terrible place to leave it, just when we finally get to the Big Damn Rescue you leave us hanging! I loved it that Kaylee is finally acting like Kaylee again and has patched things up with Simon. Great story!

Loved Jayne's reaction to the Tam estate, and his comment about "a real shower". Also loved, of course "We are NOT having sex in Simon's bed."

Little moments like that are, in my opinion, very Jossian and a key part of what makes Firely work; as dark is it can be sometimes, there are the little moments of funny that make us smile.

Good on you, Tamsibling! You go, girl.

"I have a way? Is that better than a plan?"

Loved it!! Damn cliff hanger :P

I really like how Kaylee started coming around, and I LOVED the interplay between River and Jayne...in the middle of all the drama there's still small moments of laughter that kind of brings them back to a "normal" life for just a few minutes.

Waiting for 15.....

"That is about what they had guessed would be Simon’s solution to all that Kaylee and the children had been through."

What Kaylee and the kids went thru!!! What's Simon, a wayward bystandard. See, this is why I can't stand Mal and Inara.

Great chapter, even if Kaylee got off too easy yet again.

I loved the moment of River reading the letters to take stock of how far she's come. So poignant.

No wonder Simon has so many doubt and self loathing issues. Whenever the @#$% hits the fan Kaylee's always the first to turn on him. Of everyone in this story she has the least amount of faith in her husband. My opinion of Kaylee has never waiver, I'm sorry to say. I always thought she was just as self centered as River.

Bless you ManicGiraffe for always saying the things I’m too chicken to say. Every time I read your posts I’m so elated someone else is on the same page as me!

On a seperate note, thank you for restraining from calling Simon a boob in the last many chapters. That’s my biggest pet peeve in firefly fic. I know it’s cannon but it’s horribly overused.

*** “I would die to keep you safe,” he murmured to her, resting his forehead against hers.

“Well, let’s not make that plan a, all right,” she teased him lightly, ***

No, it'll probably be plan b.

Kaylee got let off very lightly here.

And River getting shot doesn't get her off the hook either - she started this fuss, she can end it, her Pop not withstanding.

Noting her fear, Regan hastened to add, “I just thought you might like to come home, take a real shower, eat some real food, maybe a nap in your old bed?”
~ Ah, nothing like a shower and some real food at your old house to get you in the mood to kill your father

Simon tried to ignore the man, hoping he would just go away
~ With anyone who isn't Mal, I could see Simon pulling this off

Pulling back, she rolled her eyes at him, and said firmly, “We are not going to have sex in my brother’s room.”
A little put out that she had seen through his thinly veiled attempt to drive Simon crazy, he pouted and muttered, “I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.”
~ LOL @ River and Jayne discussing having sex in Simon's bed is funny

Placing a finger to his lips, she told him firmly, “If’n you tell me I was right one more time, I might just have to slap you again.”
~ Now that is something I don't think I will ever hear a woman say, at least not to me
