This is part of a prompt table I am working on. You can find it http://www.geocities.com/maegovannen/Firefly/69FicChallenge.html>; Here.

All the stories from it are standalones unless otherwise noted.

This is a sequel to http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=13087 >‘Kiss’ and http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=13142 >‘Wet’. Please read them first before reading this one.

This is attempt at writing more Book into a story as he is not in any way a strength of mine. Plus, I thought it was fitting that he'd try to counsel some of the crew on matters of the heart.

After the hilarious story surrounding the Captain and Inara’s dare, which Simon was grateful took any possible questioning off of what had or hadn’t happened with he and Kaylee the night before, Simon took River to the infirmary to continue with his testing.

Kaylee’d smiled at him encouragingly when he left, making him feel even more uncomfortable as he led his protesting sister out of the room.

Throughout the day, River tried to put him in a position where he’d need to talk to Kaylee, but he’d found all manner of ways to avoid it and he was all too happy when River had consented to lie down for a nap. She was getting better, her lucid periods and the way she’d handled Early a few weeks ago, proof that his treatments were working – somewhat.

His head in his hands, Simon didn’t hear the Shepherd approach until the man had joined him on the couch in the common room.

“Long day?”

Simon’s head snapped up and he grinned wryly. “No more difficult than yesterday, or the day before.”

“You look tired, son. Everything else all right?” Book maintained that innocent look on his face but it was very clear to Simon that the man was prying for info.

But Simon refused to play along. He’d already been berated incessantly by Jayne all morning with his not-so-thinly-disguised attempts at finding out what had happened after he and Kaylee had gone

Wait! I wasn't done!

I love this and the end scene is by far my favorite - Simon's conflict over doing something for himself, giving into his own emotions and keeping himself focused solely on River is just perfect ... as is Kaylee's patience. Although her comment to Inara about tying him to the bed if he didn't make a move is perfect! So Kaylee ... And Mal has the emotional maturity of a dung beetle ... but that's probably why we find him so endearing!

Love it ... there I said it again!

Excellent work. I love how you captured Simon's conflict... the conflict that any man with a sense of honor and family would encounter. He wants Kaylee for himself (and for family later possibly), but River is family NOW, and close family at that. I have always found this side of Simon to be very old worldly and VERY appropriate... it's the reason he is on of my favorite characters.

You know, I meant to end that with a bit about how you did and always have done an excellent job capturing that side of the relationship... sorry, got on a tangent.

Loved Simon finally stumbling through his reasons to Kaylee and I really wanted to yell at the Shepherd for interrupting even though the reason was yet again another freak out from River. Sigh. Ali D :~)

Gotta wonder if River had her episode on purpose. Cuz some of the best writing about Simon and River's relationship comes where River is split between wanting to give Simon the chance of being happy and fearing Simon will be sublimated by any new affections and would forget about her.

Really loved how you handled this, leiasky! Especially Simon embodying Book's comment to Mal about exploding when trying to repress emotions, and his stumbling comfession about his conflict between his duty towards River and his desire towards Kaylee:D

“I may tie him to my bed and have my way with him"

“Yes, I harbor deep and meaningful feelings for Simon. I honestly think I love him. Truly. You’ve found me out.”

proof that kacidilla's should not drink while reading this story...unless she wants to taste the drink through her nose...

Well Done, Leiasky. Well Done.

and so beautiful with the Kaylee and Simon scene at the end...so endearing...

well this is what i was GOING to post: “Why didn’t you give the Cap his foot bath in here? In – private.”

why, kaylee, will you believe i asked myself the very same question? hehe

“Yes, I harbor deep and meaningful feelings for Simon. I honestly think I love him. Truly. You’ve found me out.”
-and this--you know i LOVE that line.

and omg:
“Yeah, upset I didn’t pay for her to get some too, no doubt.”

poor mal. this is his personal hell. and possibly your best yet, leiasky. still, i cant help wishing kaylee (and maybe mal) would get on simon (not literally in mal's case...well, maybe) for all these excuses. i see where he's coming from, and truly his love for river is commendable, but why cant the brainy doc see that he can't do this alone? if he let kaylee in (and the others) they could help him with river. simon and mal both have a condition where they're too damn noble for their own good. maybe they are soulmates ;)

“He wanted to one-up me, mei mei. And I most certainly wasn’t going to let Malcolm Reynolds have the satisfaction.”
~ hehehehe good attitude for Inara, well done there

Book rolled his eyes at Mal’s attempt to divert his attention. What was it about this damn crew? Emotionally stunted, all of them.
~ I love Book's frustration with the sarcasm that he gets from everyone else on the crew

Mal talking about paying for Simon and/or Kaylee to get some was pretty funny.

Only person routinely displaying any kind of emotion is the crazy one.
~ hey now, I am sure that Jayne's emotions are being shown, seeing as he doesn't really do a good job of hiding them :)

“Or do ya just not like girl folk?”
~ BWAHAHAHA !!!

“If you apologize for this, I’m gonna smack you in the head with my biggest wrench.”
~ very nice Kaylee line, and I can most certainly see her going through with it

Good. I liked it.

When Kaylee and Simon finally get their shit together in Season 2 (or 5, or whatever...), I think this is where thierrelationship will go. River's crazy-go-nutedness will get in the way, and Simon'll have to choose. He'll choose his sister.
