A/N: All right, even though the comments are dwindling (ahem!) I will post chapter 7 in hopes that this might start to really show you where the story is going ... trust me, there is angst in them 'thar hills and it's only going to get worse before it gets better.
With that said - please, please, please comment ... even if you don't dig it! I'm telling you comments are like a drug - and I am in withdrawal here, people! Share the love!
Many thanks once again to Leiasky. If I were to list all I should attribute to her, it would be a posting in and of itself.
One other thing - this part starts directly after the end of chapter 6. If you haven't read it yet, I would.

A NEW DAY, ch. 7: Out of Control
***
In her room, Rylee awoke with a start, tears already running in tracks down her cheeks. Pulling her knees into her chest, she could feel her mother’s distress, reaching out to her like a sharp knife, poking her heart and piercing her brain with an agony no four-year-old should know. Crying heavily, Rylee rocked herself for a few minutes, trying to rid her mind and body of the pain.
But it was no use, her mother was suffering, a lot, and it was only going to get worse. Rising on shaky legs, Rylee grabbed for the doll she had taken to sleeping with and in a daze ran from her room, her small footsteps echoing along the wood in the night.
Running down and out into her grandparents’ yard, the moonlight drew a silver path into the woods by their house. Trying to escape the pain, Rylee quickened her pace and ran, her feet slipping a bit on the dirt and rocks that assaulted them, her nightgown not doing much to keep the chill of the night away. But Rylee didn’t care – she just wanted to be gone, to be rid of this agony that had ruled her heart and mind for weeks now.
Breathing hard, she just kept running.

Cadie awoke with a sharp gasp, the pain she felt from Kaylee causing her own mid-section to ache uncomfortably. Glancing around her darkened room, C
Ahh, I love all the angst!
I hope River kills that SOB and gets Rylee back.
I hope you post chapter 8 soon!!
I LOVE this story!!
This is just all around bad news. Please fix it.
I have really enjoyed this entire series. You have imagined some wonderful adventures for the Crew, and all our couples are happy and snuggly-in-love. Even Zoe gets a daughter.
I was fascinated by Gabriel Tam's evil plan to brainwash Simon. That's original. Usually it's River that everyone wants back so badly. Nice twist!
I love how strong River has become emotionally. I find it very credible, because I don't think she could have survived if she weren't incredibly strong. My heart broke for her when she miscarried. I completely understand why she would become obsessed with having a child of her own. Until she gets that antidote, the Blue Hands are still in control of her body. It's wrong to endanger her family as she is doing, but I completely understand why she acts as she does.
I love the way you've written Jayne. He is strong yet loving, simple but not stupid. (Thanks for that.) Write more Jayne, please?
The only quibble I have is that everyone cries too much for my taste. Poor Kaylee makes me want to buy stock in Kleenex. I think she, and especially Inara and River, are stronger than that. You can grieve without dissolving in tears, I think. But I still love it. Cadie is one of my favorite OCs.
Again, I love this series. I want Gabriel Tam to die a slow shameful death. Thanks for sharing your fantastic imagination with us all :)
You've got me addicted, and have since the first time I read one of your stories (only in the last week or so, I've caught up by reading every day). I didn't like to hear that you plan on one of the BDH's "making the ultimate sacrifice" (I did read that right on your main page, right?). I think I know who it is, and I hope I'm wrong. Be nice to us poor readers, please? And I don't mean River and Cadie and Rylee kind of readers. ;-)
Lovely summation of feeling, eh TS?
;)
This is definitely beautiful...the three dimensional angst bubbling and simmering here is dark and bitter like the finest chocolate. And you've gotten me mighty addicted to the stuff...angst, not chocolate. Really ain't a fan of chocolate;)

~ This left a very wonderful image of River in my head. Thank you.
It's a miracle Simon's head didn't literally explode from having to worry about his kidnapped daughter while performing a way-too-early emergency c-section. That man needs a medal (and a beer).
The scene wherein Jayne chews out River for not wanting to tell Simon is very well written, and I liked it.
The tension is building for every single one of the crew to become disgusted with River as they discover that she is responsible for the nightmarish drama, and I for one think she deserves it and then some for her selfish endeavors.
